My definition of Incel would include guys who managed to have sex once or twice but have never had an actual girl friend -- I'll call these guys functional Incels. If we include this group the percentage grows significantly.

If we ignore the "bitter and hateful" aspect of the incel movement for a second and just take the literal definition if incel as an involuntary celibate, i.e. someone who simply can't achieve any sex whatsoever, then I don't believe that 40% of men meet that criterion.

What I do believe is that at least 40% of men (and probably a much, much larger portion) can't achieve the type of sex lives they'd like to have. They're sexually frustrated. Many of them might have girlfriends but those girlfriends are average or worse in the looks department and aren't fucking them as constantly as the men would want to be fucked. But being sexually frustrated isn't the same as being a flat-out incel, especially if you're including the person's attitude (e.g. bitter and hateful) as a necessary part of what incel means.

In response to the article you linked, I think the mass availability of social media and pornography are having tremendous effects. Young men have re-wired themselves to spill all their seed in their dimly lit basements while looking at pixels on a screen and then are clueless around real women.

Thus, any estimate based on self-reports is a speculation. To say anything for sure, we need to put a bunch of people in an enclosure and monitor them 24/7 for a decade or so /s.

Since not only nobody has done it, but it's pretty much illegal and will never pass any ethics committee approval, within the current conditions, your view is impossible to disprove.

Not to mention that, apparently, even the study itself is not accessible to the public to fact-check.

And on top of it, not being a virgin doesn't mean you're not going to be an incel. I've known men who had one successful relationship at 17 and then nothing.

But people are still going to counter argue you by saying the average N count is 8 or 11 and ignore the distribution and variations.

Don't throw regular virgins in one bucket with incels. There's a huge difference between someone who's just a virgin and someone who's bitter, angry, autistic, antisocial, sociopathic and delusional enough to associate themselves with the incel movement. Anyone can be a virgin, but only especially nasty people would associate themselves with a movement that praises school shooters like Gods and that unironically asks for the enslavement of all women.

If the number of incels was 40% I would gladly support drastic measures to drastically reduce that number, because incels are much, much more deranged, dangerous, explosive, harmful and useless than any other group of people.
