The "natural state of being" was not especially feminist either. Women had a mostly rigid path set for them and could not try the male social role. A life of bearing children and gathering was all they could hope for.

[–]daveofmarsFor Martian Independence6 points7 points8 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

It's been the said on TRP that if men were ever spirited away then women would go back to living in mud huts. It seems that the writer of the article agrees with this, seeing how our "natural state" means living as nomads in mud huts.

It really, really odd sometimes how the two ends of a spectrum can somehow converge with each other, like radfems and tradcons, or in this case, feminists and TRP.

How about we don't rely on shitty reasoning?

[–]Jammerly1Snatching TRP Bald since 20170 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I'm not sure how you came to that conclusion based on the article...

[–]daveofmarsFor Martian Independence2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

First sentence:

For 99% of our human history, we were a nomadic species, moving from place to place as Hunter-Gatherers.

Nomadic hunter gatherers basically live in mud huts, tents or yurts so that they can pack up easily and follow animal migration.

A "return to form of feminism", which isn't really even true but w/e, isn't a selling point because why would you want to take cues from pre-civilization, or even pre-agricultural people? What's progressive about that?

With that line of reasoning, you can say "for 99% of our history we didn't have modern medicine and most people died before the age of 40, so this [nuclear wasteland] is just a return to form".

I feel like technological advances is somewhat of a separate conversation than how we organize ourselves socially. It certainly has influenced social organization, but our biology and how we're wired to interact socially is somewhat stagnant.

seizing the means of survival

Careful, your Marxism is showing, also no, the patriarchy evolved because it was the best system for the time period and was designed for the protection of women and children, men went out and did the dangerous work because they were better at it while women maintained the home environment and raised children, if it inflated men's value it was only to ensure they all had mates so the proles would have some incentive to work for.

At some point when we evolved to have cognitive abilities

Is this before or after agriculture, do tell.

the males figured out that since they were bigger than women, that they could force women to do whatever they wanted.

Uh huh, do you have anything concrete to back this assertion up with?

The advancement of technology has allowed a large number of people to make a living without using physical labor, something men obviously excelled at. As we shift our economy in this direction, something that has evolved in America steadily over the past 100 years, women are reclaiming our natural birthrights

No, technology is just removing the need for the old system and it is the reason you even have these rights in the first place, let me ask you a question: do you think women would have been able to secure the rights they have now if they did not begin demanding these rights around the same time as technology began to move forward to the point where it was possible for women to do the same work as men?

natural birthrights

And who exactly decides what is and is not a natural birthright?

It probably started out that way, but somehow the conversation changed from “this is the safest most efficient way to organize society” to “God ordained men rulers over women” and “women are not able to fully participate in government or political society”. There have been cultures where women’s contributions were valued outside of the home, and then others who suddenly considered it “preposterous. “

Is this before or after agriculture, do tell.

I would imagine it was somewhere around when we discovered language, which scientists can’t seem to agree on. Maybe around 100,000 years ago? The Agricultural revolution seems to be what cemented patriarchy.

Uh huh, do you have anything concrete to back this assertion up with?

Y’all do that now. In 2018.

Well, no we wouldn’t, which is kind of the point of the post. Pre-agricultural revolution women were responsible for about 70% of the food production and resource gathering. That’s a pretty large contribution and probably explains their more egalitarian approach to society. I think we had a blip in history where technology made a world more favorable to male dominance. Modern American society has been steadily leaning more egalitarian as we make more advances.

Realising that only the owners of property were allowed to participate in the voting process mainly because it was viewed as being indicative of the character of the individuals in question, owning a lot of property will root you down to a particular place and they also now have more to lose.

Y’all do that now. In 2018.

Great response.

Right, so how can you claim it is natural when it seems to be an arbitrary idea based upon on what the needs of human society are at any given point in a certain time period? We could advance even further beyond this point to another form of "society" that would favour men over women, you are making the assumption that we are as advanced as we will be and that women will just remain more needed than men forever, we have no real way of knowing how long that will remain true for, so you see, it is not a return to natural form, it is just a series of natural changes, there is a distinction you have deliberately ignored there.

Just by sheer amount of time - 8M years of human evolution as hunter – gatherers, with about 200 – 300K years as what we would call “modern humans”, probably contributed almost exclusively to our current biological wiring vs 10,000 of Modern Patriarchy.

Really makes you think about the overall ethics of certain technology.

[–]PBRScagsquad(((Prima Illuminatus)))0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Just by sheer amount of time

That does not mean anything, are you saying those several years where we were not under a patriarchal system was superior in terms of quality of life, advancement, and overall health for a society in comparison to these hunter- gatherer societies? Do you think this is better?

Really makes you think about the overall ethics of certain technology

It is about what is optimal for the human race as a whole, a lot of ethical discussions are just meaningless hand wringing.

Several million years not living in a patriarchal system. It’s hard to judge what’s “superior”. We’re clearly individually healthier, but we’re also infinitely more destructive as a species. Both to ourselves, via wars and advanced weaponry, as well as to the environment.

[–]PBRScagsquad(((Prima Illuminatus)))0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Hmmmmm, I would say the system that let us make rapid advancements over a much shorter period of time is probably the superior system.

[–]Jammerly1Snatching TRP Bald since 20170 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well, slavery was pretty effective for a time, but I’m sure a lot of people would disagree it was a superior way of life. Better to die young and free than an old slave.

Also, I’m not 100% convinced we’ll be able to avoid a nuclear war. Or won’t suffocate/radiate/starve/drown ourselves via global warming. If these things happen I’d argue we should have stayed in our damn huts.

Everything humans do is "natural", there is no line between nature and what is unnatural, that is arbitrarily decided.

"Nature is affected - from without - by an overturning which modifies it in its interior, denatures it and obliges it to be separated from itself. Nature denaturing itself, being separated from itself, naturally welcoming its outside into the inside, is catastrophe, a natural event that over throws nature, or monstrosity, a natural deviation within nature"

The natural state is what humans are in right now, this is all nature, it denatures itself and attacks itself from the inside, making what one thinks is nature into nature.

Nomadism is natural! Why do people insist on living in houses? We are oppressed by a sedentaristic state that forces us to have a "proof of residency". Let's reclaim our natural birthrights, roam the world freely and gather food everywhere we find it!

God created Adam and Eve, and his design for humanity was that Adam would be the leader of his wife. There is nothing more natural than Biblical patriarchy. Alternate relationship models are deviations and the result of original sin.

Do you ever feel shitty because man serves God and woman serves man?

That's suggesting that men have a more direct relationship to God than you do, as a woman.

Electricity, running water, plumbing, television, radio, smart phones, Reddit, the internal combustion engine, airplanes, X ray machines, etc etc etc are also not a part of our natural state. So what? Are you claiming you want to return to a time before our brains were as large and complicated and we were more like cows or packs of dogs? What exactly is your point.

Also feminism has nothing to do with your weird transient commie slave nonsense. Women have equal rights and have had them since long before I was born. It isn't 1910 anymore grandma.

[–]Jammerly1Snatching TRP Bald since 20170 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Women have had equal rights since the 1970s. Ask your grandma, lol.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

What right did women gain in the 70s that they lacked before?

[–]Jammerly1Snatching TRP Bald since 20170 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Here's two major ones:

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Oh an equal outcome "right" along with the "right" to murder babies. By all means do whatever you want. The best part about freedom is that the defective genes get weeded out of the gene pool. We were far far past the time when we should push all women to breed and not murder their babies. Men have evolved like crazy for thousands of years. With the advent of patriarchy women were no longer allowed to evolve. I'm glad to see that we have granted women the right to evolve along with man.

[–]Jammerly1Snatching TRP Bald since 20170 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I would have added this one, but it was done in the 60s. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equal_Pay_Act_of_1963

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Oh another "right" to equal outcome.

Where's my right to be equally represented as school teachers? Where's my wife's right to be the CEO of Google. This equality shit is bunkum.

[–]Jammerly1Snatching TRP Bald since 20170 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It just makes it illegal to arbitrarily pay women less despite equal production, it doesn't require that the sex ratios be the same.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm not going to argue with you it will only make you believe in your communist beliefs even more. I'm just going to keep winning. I know how badly it hurts the envious communists to see someone else winning.

[–]Plopolok0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Early humans may have been polyamorous

"[women's] propensity to make a lot of noise during sex [is] a prehistoric mating call to encourage more men to come and join in."

Would you be willing to return to that too? If every man could join sex everytime, it might be easier to remove all kinds of oppression.

[–]whichbladeNA Paler Shade of Purple0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That's hilarious.

Seems a bit chicken and the egg though. Women make noise usually to express pleasure or pain during sex.

You could argue sex is pleasurable so that women make the noise of pleasure.

And I would think that would be directed at the partner, not at whoever is within earshot.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You know what's super memorable of an the times I've had teh sex with a female? How loud she screams. I'm like totes half deaf from all the screaming and screaming the female makes when engaged in the sex act. As an experienced alpha Chad I can guarantee you it is just like you see on pornhub. I have lots of experiences here.

😂

[–]disposableboyfriendmeat robot 🤖0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

There is so much wrong with this.

Men and women worked in tandem with each other, but neither sex was "dominant" over the other. Each gender could more or less each fend for themselves, similar to what we see other mammal groups today, who move in herds, and have loose social structures.

We are a sexually dimorphic species. So are chimpanzees, gorillas, and orangutans. Males are substantially stronger than females. As hunters-gatherers, in general, men hunted and women gathered, because hunting is more dangerous and physically demanding.

At some point when we evolved to have cognitive abilities, the males figured out that since they were bigger than women, that they could force women to do whatever they wanted.

This is backwards. Males did not need highly-evolved cognitive abilities to figure out that they could force women. They just needed to be stronger -- which they were, by a large margin. If anything, it is precisely because of our more evolved cognitive abilities that we treat each other more equally.

Patriarchy is basically men inflating their overall value to women and forcing our dependence by seizing the means of survival and forcing women to go through men to get it. Patriarchy probably started out benevolent, or at least neutral, and grew to be increasingly oppressive and misogynistic over time.

No, the "overall value" of men was already intrinsically higher than women's in both hunter-and-gatherer and agricultural lifestyles. About the only exception is women being able to bear children. Hunting generates far, far more calories than gathering. Agriculture is very physically demanding. Men, because they are stronger, are more efficient at converting food (calories) into labor (which eventually produces more calories). Plus, it's also hard and dangerous to deal with large domesticated animals, like cows and horses.

Our ancient concepts of God revolved around Goddess / Nature and fertility worship. The shift to Patriarchy led to the rise of male-centric religions such as Islam, Judaism, and Christianity. As far as religions go, these are relatively new, as they are only about 2000 or so years old.

Never mind that Judaism is about 3,500 years old, and Islam is only about 1,500 years old. Never mind all the other major religions, like Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, and so on. Never mind all the other parts of the world that do not practice Abrahamic religions, yet somehow also ended up with a patriarchy.

That includes, voting, the ability to own property, reproductive rights, education, the ability to work outside of the home, etc.

Vast majority of men were not able to vote throughout most of history. Reproductive rights did not exist for anybody until the advent of birth control. Education was reserved for the very few.

Feminism is a return to a natural state of being. These rights that women are now all “asking for” were ours to begin with...

No. Women never had any rights. Nor did men. There are no inherent, intrinsic, God-given rights. The only right is might.

The natural state of things is humans roving the land in small groups of 20 to 50. When their children become too numerous to feed, they get abandoned. When their elderly become to slow to keep up, they get left behind. When one such group encounters another, in some cases they kill each others' men and rape each others' women.

The author is correct that the advancement in technology is changing things. Most of this technology has been invented by men. And there is nothing natural about the changes that are coming.
