In a completely unrelated note to TRP. Yes, the HP movies were complete shit. Made it through 4 of the movies and said fuck it because the story and characters were almost completely different.

In a related note, this is the classic paradox of feminist bull shit. Feminists are going to get mad no matter how the woman in a piece of media is written. Everything on the scale of worthless character to perfect character is flawed in the feminists' mind. I guess the logical conclusion is that feminists want all women removed from media.

Don't watch any more, by the last film the characters just become parodies of themselves.

Perks of watching them without reading any of the books. I didn't know any of this going in and just thought they were alright movies.

Highly recommend giving less of a shit.

While that is the proper course of action, the feminizing of everything is kind of fucking annoying. It's a world created by men and this bullshit untrue narrative being pushed is so laughable (in the new Mallnficent Movie, the Prince doesn't wake her up, now it's the Queen kissing her! No I'm not joking.)

my mom forced my whole family to watch that this week, haha. Cheesy as fuck, yes. But a decent spin for the CG money grab that it was. They were playing on the whole motherly love is the only real love thing. Would you rather they show the same beta love-story bullshit?

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points18 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think the "don't need no man" narrative is worse but suit yourself.

Maleficent's life in danger from a bunch of armed men. Her lover injects himself, takes her wings, and saves her life. He explains that to her. The episode is presented as the justification for Maleficent breaking bad, tearing shit up, and initiating a prolonged campaign of violent and destructive revenge.

Diaval's (the crow's) life is in danger from a bunch of armed men. Maleficent injects herself, takes his wings, and saves his life. She explains that to him. The episode is presented as the justification for... enslaving Diaval.

There was a lot more insidious spin going on in that movie than the awful "motherly love is the only real love" thing.

dude was going to kill her but pussied out and took her wings so he could inherit the throne and the crow offered himself as a slave and why am I talking about this i don't care about this movie

Thought it was interesting and worth sharing with the community.

This person is idealizing Ron in the books, who was a cowardly, jealous beta, who constantly abandoned his friends or his goals because it was hard.

Ron is the exact type of guy TRP loathes. He's useless at everything and feels entitled to shit without having to work for it. He's a perfect example of the modern male.

Sure Hermione is idealized but this doesn't bother me at all really, especially when you know the history of the movies. The director and producer and writers all thought Harry would end up with Hermione and so they made all of the movies under that assumption. Only when books 6 and 7 were released did they figured out the direction the books were going and had to hamfist that relationship into the movies, which is why it sucked on screen.

[–]itsGucciGucci 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

They knew all along how the books would end. Snape knew he'd die in the first book. JK Rowling filled them in just enough so they could act it out, but did not tell them the entire story.

[–]Anderfail 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That's not what I have read previously. They definitely may have had the overarching storyline but the details, such as relationships, were entirely left out.

[–]needmorefat 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The director and producer and writers all thought Harry would end up with Hermione and so they made all of the movies under that assumption.

I bet Rowling herself was thinking along those lines at first.

[–]Anderfail 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

She actually recently admitted she screwed that up and should have had them together at the end.

Here's something I found interesting.... I thought that Emma Watson's speech to the UN shilling the HeForShe campaign reminded me of book Hermione's Society for the Promotion of Elvish Welfare (SPEW)... a subplot from one of the books that wasn't really covered in the movies.

Basically Hermione becomes an insufferable activist for the freeing of house elves...house elves who don't really want to be free. She tries to rope Harry and Ron into her organization. It's been a while since I read the books but I think she ends up getting a lot of grief from the elves themselves (who don't want to be "free") before Dumbledore shuts her down.

Life imitating art?

But because of the way the filmmakers changed Hermione's character, this subplot didn't find it's way into the movies. Hmm...

Harry potter was weird. Especially in the fourth movie in real life he would've been slaying pussy

[–]Bwhitty23 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

What books were these? I haven't read the books in a while but I don't remember it but I would guess it was between book 5-7.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Same here. Haven't read them in ages. I want to say ...I dunno in the middle somewhere. I just remember it was Hermione being an insufferable know it all and the elves ended up resenting her because she was wrecking a good thing they had going.

Meh, literature is almost always butchered by film. Hurry Putter, though it is hardly literature, is no exception.

Watched "Les Miserables" recently. Utter shit. Take out the literary symbolism, finesse in descriptions, and occasional inner monologue and it becomes fuckers singing on the tv for two hours. Completely butchered the ending too. Wolverine Jean Valjean btw.
