You know all these tropes that can be percieved as sexist/racist and whatnot. They can bother you for a variety of reasons and we all know that this is a potentially explosive topic when it goes against popular material. This isn't what this is about.
What bothers me it how dull they are.
When I see yet another female character in a movie or TV show getting raped for some cheap drama and shock value, I don't get offended. I get bored.
The same goes for these "Damsel in Distress" scenarios. You'd at least expect writers to put some intersting twist to it now and them, but in bigger productions it's only more overused clichés.
Of course the same goes for tropes that are sexist against men. You know, like abuse against men being played for laughs. Or the bumbling sitcom dad. Yawn.
I think, if anything, the problem of mainstream fiction isn't a lack of political correctness (or an alleged brutal enforcement of it) but a lack of originality. This is just my personal taste, and I also have other criteria than creativity, but what do you think?
