For everyone's sake, can you explain GamerGate as you understand it to be?

I thought it was about game journalists censoring and threatening anyone who they disagreed with?

As I and other commenters have said before, Gamergate is like World War One, with Zoe Quinn as the Balkan Powder Keg event setting off a chain reaction of unrelated alliances against each other. For two or three years prior to this, SJWs like Anita Sarkeesian had been invading video game communities with absurd accusations of sexism and even more absurd demands for change, based on inaccurate descriptions of video games and their communities. There was disorganized pushback against this until Z Que, when the outraged had finally had enough and decided to organize against the invasion.

I view SJWs invading video games as a power play against the bottom rung of the social ladder, gamers. I am sympathetic to gamergate as I absolutely despise SJWs with every fiber of my being, to the point of supporting literally any opposition to them I probably wouldn't normally care about. However, I think 4th wave internet/tumblr feminism is on its way out, and gamergate will go with it. So will TRP imo, as I think its mostly a reaction to feminism. Then the manosphere will go back to being what it was before 2010.

...I followed this story for about as long as I could stomach it. Last I heard the only evidence ZQ had cheated for reviews was from her ex's crazy manifesto, not exactly a credible source. And even if she had slept around for reviews, the backlash against her was still beyond insane. Threats of violence, rape and death, hacking into her personal info and that of her family and friends, posting pictures of her as a 13yo, actually hoping she would kill herself from the harassment... I get the distinct feeling that none of this would have happened to a man in that position, that it was inherently a matter of ZQ being female in a hobby that is mostly dominated by male opinions and ideas.

I think GG is more than enough evidence of sexism and misogyny in the gaming community. I'm a gamer, I've played both console and PC games my whole life, YES THERE IS SEXISM IN GAMES and if you want to close your eyes and ears and deny deny go ahead, doesn't make a difference.

Things are better now, you can actually play as a female character in a lot more games, female characters do a lot more than sit around looking pretty and waiting to be saved by the hero (The Last of Us had a lot of great, realistic female characters who were actually cool and useful too), but you still have a lot of tired tropes that put me off so many games. Anything with a half-naked woman on the cover is bound to rife with them, and Sarkeesian while not exactly revolutionary did a good job at identifying a lot of them. I don't see what was so terrible about pointing that out. Oh no, game developers might actually put some effort into making decent female characters and not ones who just act like a prize or a cheerleader for the male protagonist! Whatever will the world come to???

I'm a gamer, if playing a lot of games qualifies me as that.

And I think GamerGate is a distraction. It started as anger over one woman and her escapades with a few guys who write about games. And it is now an umbrella under which there are those who honestly believe in the initial goal, those who cynically believe in it, those who are in love with fighting so called SJW(a term that has been so abused, it no longer has any meaning) and people who just like to harass women. One can argue what percentage of so called GGers make up each portion. I don’t know, I don’t follow GG. But they’re all there.

And I don’t see Anita Sarkeesian as worth being talked about. I’ve seen some of her videos. They’re subpar and poorly researched/presented in my opinion. She’s not as knowledgable about games or able to present a balanced opinion as is needed for the issue of how women are presented in games and what, if anything, should be done about it.

But as usual, we must panic and point furiously at the ones we fear, as if they have more power than they do. Anita’s not going to take our GTAs away. She’s really not that good. Unless we tell everyone she is.

The big issue with GG is the same as with most groups. Anyone can say they’re part of it. Without a central guiding leadership that’s acknowledged and a spread of opinions that are embraced, it’s a mess and because of that it won’t do anything significant in the end. It might even make things worse. And it ignores more important issues for gamers.

Huh? I believe there are actual misogynists and sexists who are angry about gaming journalists. I also believe that gaming journalism is a business and they are probably only releasing content they think will generate them income. I'm totally fine with that.

I'm also fine with Zoe Quinn sleeping with whoever she wants to. If you've ever been to a gaming convention you know there's probably sex going on, I'm unsurprised. Whether or not she actually cheated on her bf, idk, nor is it relevant other than that it could have sparked this witch hunt. It's obviously no one's business.

GamerGate has basically devolved into a bottomless pit of angry nerds badmouthing any woman who dares step into the realm of games culture under the guise of defending the world against censorship. Why should women get games if they can't have women, amirite?

I liked Angry Joe's rant about it. I don't think all gg people are sexist, but it did start with harassment of somebody, and to be honest, that's worse then shoddy ethics in video game journalism. That being said, in order to fix that, you need to just stop buying from companies that pay off reviewers.

Also, I like Anita Sarkeesian. The only real issue I have with her are her videos can get long winded and kinda boring. I think that might have to do with her more wanting to be an educational series then a gaming series. MatPat of the Game Theory series did a video similar to what Anita does, about how gays are presented in video games and it was great for education and entertainment. I'm not saying Anita needs to start throwing pies at people, but her videos could be a little less dry.

I also think that criticism of any genre from different perspectives is valuable. One quick one on wrestling was how this one wrestler Gail Kim came out, and was described as "sexy and talented". So the podcast host while discussing that show asked, could you imagine if the commentator described Gunner as sexy and talented? Criticisms like this can help to raise consciousness as Richard Dawkins would say.

I am, in general, not OK with nerds having sex or gathering in groups for any reason. Beyond that, I don't really know or care what GamerGate is.
