There are gender roles in western society. We just all disagree on how they are set, who sets them, what they are, what they should be and how to get there.

I don't think you'll find anyone agreeing they don't exist.

It's either women get the equality they keep bitching about or we go back to a real old-fashioned Patriarchy. What we have now is something in between, where women enjoy the advantages of independence gained by Feminism while at the same time being sheltered from consequences by Traditionalism.

Personally, I favor full independence for women.

Many of the countries doing the best in the world have the least defined gender roles. Many of the countries doing the worst have the most defined gender roles (unless they have resources such as abundant oil etc.)

Having less defined roles allows people to thrive.

Go to somewhere like Papua New Guinea and see what unchecked patriarchy looks like.

Women's equality with men is desperately needed to bring about far better management of and responses to events such as disaster and war.

Gender roles aren't a construct. They are the product of evolved specialization. Men lift, women care. Men fight and die, women give birth.

The only reason you don't see these roles being enforced now is because our situation doesn't presently require it. We have comfort, and abundance, and satisfaction.

Add a natural disaster or enemy invasion into the mix and you'll see how quickly people assume traditional gender roles without hesitation or complaint.

I think we need to do away with binary gender and have something like a testosterone scale.

Instead of saying men should focus on career and women on homemaking, we could say that of any couple, straight or gay, the higher-T person should focus on career and the lower-T person on homemaking.

This would IMHO match far better how human brains actually tick.

We will probably need to abolish the straight / gay gap as well. Sex is a form of exciting dominance between a high-T and low-T person, but they could be of any gender. It could be a bear and twink, a butch and a femme, a butch pegging a twink, - or the traditional combination.

If it was up to me, I would simply let people choose between Gender1 and Gender2, the first being dominant and the second being submissive. Such a choice is important both for sexual tension and generally for how to relate to people. If you choose Gender1, you will get more freedom to compete for status, but if you fail at it, you will be seen as shit, and you are not allowed to show weakness (i.e. what is traditional for men). If you choose Gender2, your submissivity will exclude you from most of status competition, and you will be seen as a bit lower status, but you will be still respected as long as you know your place, people will be gentle, polite and protective to you as long as you know your place, and you are absolved of much of responsibility (i.e. what is traditional for women).

It would be an easy world without conflict. RP men, alongside with feminist women would gladly choose Gender1. More timid men, alongside with more traditional women, would choose Gender2. We would have perfectly traditional relationships, and also the lgbt ones, but also relationships between strong feminist women and weak crybaby men, these would also roughly work like lesbian relationships, and this all would be just different examples of the same norm of one being dominant and the other submissive.

I'd like to see the genders treated genuinely equally under the law (no pussypass etc) and just let people use their freedom in any way they wish. Then the men who wanna go their own way can do that, and women who don't need no man can do that, and everything in between (equal relationships, traditional relationships, polyamorous kinky relationships, whatever) can happen with no one bitching about how unfair the system is.

If we are going to have a Patriarchy, lets start doing it right. No more faffing about.
Re-normalize the gender ratio to something more natural, like that of a chimpanzee troop. Say, 4 females to every male.
Women will be assigned the role of hetaira, pallakae, gynaekes or pornia, depending on their beauty and personality.

Since we no longer need to plow the field or grind the grain, we no longer need gender roles. Technology allows people to have the freedom to do as they choose. Not all men enjoyed plowing, not all women enjoyed the grinding stone.
