Yes, you heard that right. No, I’m not joking.

Let me give you some background and tell you a story. I went to your typical 4-year University. Study your major’s courses, but also take basic classes to broaden your knowledge base. Well, here I was as a biochemistry student taking an acting class (Yay me!).

I sucked. I couldn’t do it. I didn’t have the confidence to act. I couldn’t memorize my lines, etc... One day I went to my professor and he said, “(name), what’s your problem?”

“My problem? What do you mean?”

“Yeah, what’s your problem? Get up there and read the script for all I care. Just do it. What’s the matter?”

“Well, I’m scared of embarrassing myself. I’m worried people will laugh at me. I’m worried I’ll forget my lines. I’m—“

“Stop. You’re selfish. You keep saying ‘I, I, I.’ Stop thinking about yourself and do your job.”

Wow... I never thought about it this way before. My professor was 100% right. It doesn’t matter what I thought would happen. Just get up on stage and read the fucking lines. That’s it. Do your job.

So next time you’re worried about the outcome, stop thinking about your feelings and just fucking do it. Don’t be selfish.
