Common mantra on some of these subs is that it cannot. Usually in the context of "first impression is make or break for physical attraction". Generally I have seen this as advice for men perusing women. In my case as a man this is not true.

Certainly looks are a significant factor to me in attraction, and first impressions can be impactful but that's far from the whole story. At best this will determine the amount I would pursue intimacy off the bat.

Once I get to know someone my feelings often change radically including physical attraction. There is a lower threshold for this but not an upper one. For me the difference between a decent looking woman and the best looking woman alive isn't enough for me to justify putting up with someone I dislike as a person, even as a casual thing. Sometimes also I have found myself falling for women I initially didn't notice at all once I spent more time around them.
