There was a post on r/datingoverthirty two weeks ago where a guy started seeing someone for a month before she dropped the bombshell that she has herpes. His post was basically asking whether it's a deal breaker, or not.

Literally everyone went after him saying he'd be an idiot not to continue dating a woman with herpes. Anyone saying otherwise was downvoted into oblivion. The echo chamber in that subreddit is ridiculous.

HSV2 isn't a big deal, but it carries a massive stigma. Women are gonna get laid regardless, they're just going to have to change their standards. For men it's just one more reason to get rejected. Don't willingly expose yourself to an STD for a piece of ass. No woman is worth it.

Getting HSV-1 on your genitals, that is pretty tough. Many many people have HSV-1, most get it as children. If you think you do not have it, you are quite likely to just have it and never show symptoms rather than to not have it. In the US especially there is this whole story about HSV-1 being marketed as an STD by pharmaceutical companies to push more products. I think there is a nightmare scenario, an unlikely one, in which you could get this without taking any imprudent risks. Really sucks for her if that's what happened.

Friend of a friend got HSV-2 because her boyfriend cheated. Could blame her of course for picking the wrong guy but it still seems the punishment does not fit the crime.

I am not sure however if you need to open with this, I mean if she is only looking for sex then fair enough. Other than that this is maybe a second to third date disclosure of a medical condition.

e: in the UK btw, the national health service does not even have HSV-1 on the list of things they care about. They don't run tests for it and they will help you manage it if it's really bad, but if you remove the stigma from it it's a very common and very boring skin condition.

e2: In many European countries "herpes" means HSV-1 and you would say "genital herpes" if you mean that. "Cold-sore" is a weird euphemism to distinguish 1 from 2 Americans use. I actually remember one Biology prof I had saying "this really gives me herpes when I read this" when looking at people who cite papers in the wrong format.

I’m pretty sure HSV-2 is the bad one. Most of the US population has HSV-1. Those are the occasional yearly cold sores you may get during winter.

But she may have been mistaken and actually has HSV-2.

Fun fact HSV1 is normal at this point, 80% of the world has it, for those who dont you cant get it by sharing cups or whatever even kissing so dont worry if you come to contact with it, its not that bad (One of us) i have HSV-1, i got it when i was a baby. And also its not consider an STD. What you should worry is HSV type 2, now that right there is the gential herpies, you will get fucked haha, from what ive hear Fuck me if im wrong, but you cant get the other if you already have hsv-1 since your body is already use to it and "Immune".
