A few ~~thots~~ thoughts for your consideration:

1) Men shouldn't do this. Men shouldn't even consent to donate sperm anonymously to sperm banks. I'll look for the cite if i have time. I remember an article a few years back in which a couple had a child through artificial insemination with donated sperm from an anonymous donor. The couple either died or divorced or someone got sick, leaving the child essentially orphaned. The government (i don't remember if this was in the US or not) identified the donor and slapped him with child support payments. Reason:

You're the bio dad, the kid needs financial support, and someone's gotta pay. It's not fair for the taxpayers to do it. We don't care about your contract with the sperm bank or the adoptive parents. The state isn't a party to that contract. Someone's gotta pay, and it ain't gonna be the state.

The financial support needs of a child trump all: Private contracts, intentions of adults, circumstance, past expectations of future events. It doesn't matter that you signed your rights away. It doesn't matter that you fully expected to have nothing to do with this kid. All that matters is that you donated/supplied genetic material for the creation of a human life. And therefore, you are ultimately responsible to pay for that human life.

Or, perhaps it was a biodad or a couple that gave the kid up for adoption at infancy, something happened to the adoptive parents, and there was no one from the adoptive family to take care of the child. Same reasoning: You're the biodad, we don't care about the private arrangements even if there were court orders. Someone other than the state has to pay.

Translate that reasoning to the real meaning and what you find is

A man with money has to pay.

EDIT: My mistake: I was recalling a Kansas court decision in which a judge initially ruled a male donor to a lesbian couple was liable for child support. Ultimately, he was held not liable. Facts: William Marotta sold his sperm for $50 a cupful to a lesbian couple so they could get pregnant. One or both women inseminated themselves with the sperm without a physician's involvement or supervision, unbeknownst to Marotta, who thought they'd involve a physician. The lesbian couple got sick and lost jobs and one went on disability, resulting in their inability to support the resulting child.

The Kansas Child protective services department found out Marotta's involvement, decided he was the bio dad and thus the child's legal father, and thus on the hook for child support. Initially Kansas State Court Judge Mary Mattivi said Marotta had to pay child support because he never signed any legal documents waiving parental rights and because no physician inseminated the women with his sperm. He said "that's news to me" and contested the ruling. In 2016 Judge Mattivi reversed herself and held that Marotta is off the hook and that the lesbian partner who did not give birth to the child, should be considered the child's second parent, and that Marotta should not be considered the parent in part because he had minimal contact with the child.

The rulings hinged on (1) that a physician wasnt' involved in the insemination process; (2) the lack of legal documentation; and (3) Marotta had minimal contact with the child.

Moral of the story: If you want to donate sperm you should do it only through a sperm bank. Even then it's fraught with risk given our country's gynocentric laws. Know your state's laws about your potential liability. Once your sperm goes out of your body you have no control over what it will be used for or who will use it or under what circumstances it will be used. END EDIT.

2) Women who are doing this are extremely selfish and immature. They, like most women, are thinking only of themselves. Which leads me to....

3) This is why women really don't do well on their own as adults. This is why women need men to put guardrails on their behavior, even as adults. This is why men need to tell their women "no". Notice the guy talking about being a sperm donor to a husband who'd had a vasectomy. What were you doing for the past couple of decades? At 42, you are the student who always skipped class and did no homework and decided to start studying for the final exam the night before. And the studying started at 10:00 p.m., with the exam at 8:00 in the morning.

To her delight, she did get pregnant but sadly miscarried before 12 weeks. But Sarah says she’ll continue to use the sites until she gets pregnant again – just like scores of other women.

No surprise, she is trying conceive at an age which is very difficult to do so. This is common knowledge, and this woman only now makes a decision to have a child, where she makes no attempt to be in a committed relationship. And even if she were to get pregnant, did she think through all the other details? At 42, being pregnant and raising a child is going to be a lot harder than if she was in her 20s. She is not going to have the energy she would have had then, and it's going to be even harder doing this alone. And without a father, she either better have a lot in savings (of that I am doubtful) or she is going to have to outsource the raising of her child to likely some daycare. If she were to be lucky enough to competently raise her own child to be a well adjusted adult, she likely won't have many years to see any grandchildren, if that even happens. Overall, not a lot in her favor for an ideal outcome.
