This could have been written by my ex wife. She resented my military career so I got out. I hated teaching and wanted to work with my hands building and repairing things, but she felt I wasn’t making enough money. Finally, she decided I wasn’t fun any more and bailed.

On the plus side, without her deadweight I have risen meteorically. I haven’t been this happy in years.

Just a clear example of a woman who sees only the happy sides of relationships. She's the type that looks at everyone's lives on Facebook with envy failing to realize that those people have their issues as well.

So as soon as a few hardships happened to her husband, she bails.

Now she is experiencing her own hardship and it's going to last a lot longer than what her husband with through.

All the money and material possessions from her job won't cover up for her loneliness. In the end, she was selfish.

Nothing wrong with a blue collar job. Many of them earn a respectable income and don't require years of higher education and debt. Her being embarrassed by his "didn't have a career" shows that her "love" was not really all that strong. Or present.

I understand that they were struggling for a time, but later I see something quite revealing:

I encouraged him to find a career and was thrilled when he was accepted to join the police in 1995. It should have heralded a new chapter in our lives, but it only hastened the end. We went from spending every evening and weekend together, to hardly seeing one another. Matthew was doing round-the-clock shifts, while I worked long hours on the launch of a new magazine.

So what was accomplished by increasing their earning power? By working so much that they never saw each other that much. What is the point of them being married if that is their married life? There comes a point where working just to earn more gets to be too much. And I mean if you are working so much you have no time to spend enjoying what you have earned. There may be an exception for those who have a job that does not feel like work, but those are rather uncommon.
