His attempts to seem stoic really fuck him over in the long run. His fear of being called a woman-hater or a racist keep him submissive. He stays quiet.. why? Fear? Wanting to be liked?

Sickening. Too many people saying it's exceptionally bad because it's black history month. Just because it's February does that mean that those problems don't exist? Does it mean that only black experiences deserve coverage? Don't get me wrong, I'm all for celebrating achievements throughout history and spotlighting frontrunners of change. But if that's your argument, it's pretty weak.

Seems like the world just assumes that if you're a white middle class male that you can just coast through life on a magic carpet. Like it's first class seating on an airplane. People assume we have no idea what it's like to be judged, to not live up to society's expectations. That we're never targeted for hate speech or physical attacks. People are racist against whites as well. Middle class is still looked down on by the rich. Still judged by those with less than us. While we aren't being flogged, it's nowhere near what people imagine it to be. I'd say it's not so much different than many other demographics. Some people have it made, sure. And some are wallowing in despair.

I don't think the point was to say that straight, white, middle class males need a suffrage movement, simply that it's not as glorious as some imagine. We're right there with many, many others who have daily struggles, albeit a different variety. The world acts like only women, lgbtq, and any race besides white have any sort of strife. Not true. The simple fact of the matter is that the world always changing, and that means new problems for all of us. They say it's not the way it used to be so we can't act how our forefathers did- that's a fantastic improvement in society. But it also means that we shouldn't be viewed as the men that came before us.

So how is she gonna write this piece? With what I will call "faux-balance" -- that is to the people of middle-America it will "feel/appear" to be a "fair" article...

But of course, you have to remember, "middle-America" is NOT the audience/demographic of a NY Magazine, especially not Esquire.

To Esquire's readers... this piece is confirmation of everything they already "know" about the 'deplorables' living in 'flyover' land... meat eaters, egads hunters... who pull out their knives as a family to skin and gut bear, deer, turkeys, etc. Provincial 'bumpkins' who need to be 're-educated' out of their ignorance, etc.

And if there is really ANY doubt that is the intent, well... the intro/secondary piece -- https://www.esquire.com/news-politics/a26016262/editors-letter-march-2019/ -- written by the "editor in chief" of Esquire; one Jay Fielden (freshly minted as such in mid 2016, in the anticipation of Clinton Era II)... well he pretty much presages it with his pull-quote:

November 8, 2016, rolled around, and national life has entered what might be called a fresh hell.

Well, despite all of the blather about "ideological echo chambers"... that pretty much says it all, doesn't it?

When he speaks of people altering/getting out of their "ideological echo chambers" he's not talking about HIMSELF, or his readers... Oh heavens no... what he's talking about is How do we properly structure a 're-education camp' for these Trump-bumpkins and this article is intented to create fodder to that end.

Ok so how do we organize and make positive change from shit like this? I’m sick and tired of being told that I’m privileged when I’ve worked my ass off for everything I have. I experienced extreme racism while stationed in the Navy in Hawaii. Locals hate white males, especially military. I’m not saying I fully understand the plight of the African American in our country but I’m not and have never been a contributor to their issues, although I’m blamed for it just because of the color of my skin. Tell me how that’s not racist? I never owned slaves. I never contributed to racist government housing policies. I never prevented blacks from voting or instituted Jim Crow legislation. I’m not old enough to have ever thought racism against blacks was ok. Being friends with people of other races is just normal to me. Now I’m bombarded with shit in the media telling me EVERYDAY that because I’m a late-20-something, college educated, white male, that I must be a racist, female raping, entitled, rich frat boy.

If we try to speak up in any way, we’re shouted down and called racist, privileged, non-empathetic, transphobic, whatever the fuck.

If we tried to organize publicly we’d be called the woman hating KKK or some nonsense and we would be destroyed in the media, on social media, and subject to losing our jobs/livelihoods. We would literally have “Pat, the transmorphic, feminist swamp monster” protesting outside our doors. We don’t have the upper hand.

People are pissed because of the gender and color of the person on the cover of a magazine. How is that not racist?!

Any positive insight or suggestions???

Kind if funny/unfortunate they said "white" male and didn't include the black men. There's plenty of hatred for black men too, of course. I just realized though, that it was the March issue, so the complaints about black history month don't apply.

Makes me wonder if they didn't just pick a race (white) that's safe to hate on to see if the echo chamber gives them some circulation as angry female supremacists circulate the article in rage.

I highly doubt this will amount to anything but more reasons why males are privileged and blah blah blah. More fuel for their hatred.

I grew up very well-off, because my father worked his fucking ass off and all by himself, survived shit that none of these name-callers could even imagine. He sold his own blood, literally, to make it through medical school, which he also paid for by playing poker. He served in World War II. His first wife died of cancer, which took many years because he cared for her, and at the end, in his forties, was bankrupt. I got a first-class education because he could afford to pay for it, and because I worked my fucking ass off the get the grades, to develop the knowledge, to earn admission to the most competitive schools in the country. I paid for law school by taking a company public. I did not grow up poor, but every advantage I received was given to me by someone who very much wanted me to have it. That's how family works. That's what holds societies together. He earned it, he taught me to keep earning it, and so on.

More to the point, it's not as if pointing out that you earned what you go will make one bit of difference to the people attacking the Esquire article. The big mistake men make is believing that fairness has anything to do with any of this. It's devolved into a pure power struggle, which means that lying, manipulating and preying on the vulnerable is just fine. The people attacking us are cowards, and thieves, and parasites. They do not give one shit about fairness or "justice" or any of the stuff they claim to believe in. They want power, period, and this is how they'll begin to take it. And who they're going to take it from is us, by any means necessary. You're dreaming if you think there are any rules left. When you can have an avowed racist welcomed onto the editorial board of the New York Times; when AOC replaces a decent, experienced and very smart Congressman purely because she's the right color, when you have fuckheads like this enraged because Esquire magazine dares to portray a young white man as a human being, all bets are off.

We have to get our heads our of our collective asses and begin to push back against a culture and a society that exploits us, often kills us, and then insists that we act like it's valid or moral. The method of oppression is, first of all, to prevent us from even asking any questions, much less allow debate.
