It's because that status defines an aspect of who they are. It's the same thing when you hear women complain about anything more than once, you tell them, "well, do this so it stops" They usually become livid with the suggestion and do everything to not do the thing that would solve their problems. When it comes to being alone, I've noticed many women that are alone also tend to be narcissistic. They say things like, "my money is my money and his money is my money" and "ain't no man's wallet thick enough, ain't no man's dick big enough" and "I'm happier being alone, that way I don't have to put up with anyone's shit."
