When I was a kid, the internet was just barely a thing, but it was still absolutely thrilling to sit at your bulky desktop and chat with people all over the world. My parents, being the good parents they are, told me pretty clearly that I needed to watch everything I said, or sent, to people- that you don't want to give out personal details, or pictures, to people you didn't know because once it's been sent, you have no control of what people do with it. And if anything does get out there, it's on you- this is called responsibility.
But fuck all that, because women don't like responsibility. They love to play the agency/lack of agency game when it suits them. When women want rights they are equal to men and entitled to those privileges... when women are held to any sense of responsibility for their own choices, they are little girls who need protecting.
So when an article from CNN popped up in my news feed about about a "March Against Revenge Porn," I knew I was in for some A+ hilarity:
When Juliett was 14, a male classmate asked her for naked pictures. She was interested in him and sent him four. But he wasn't satisfied with the ones she sent -- he wanted ones that clearly showed her genitals. Juliett declined.
A few months later, a high school lab partner took out his phone and showed Juliett the same nude photos she'd sent. He had found them on an obscure internet site. "Every guy on the football team has them," she recalled him saying. "They have them of a bunch of girls."
Juliett is now a sophomore in college in Connecticut, but she clearly remembers what that violation felt like. "When you're alone and in it, you're so shamed by it that you think you're the only person who has ever been through it," she said.
That's the reason that Juliett, now 20, is organizing a March Against Revenge Porn on April 1 in Brooklyn. She came up with the idea for the event in August: "Every big movement has a march," she said, adding that it was long before the Women's March. "I didn't realize how much marching we'd be doing," she joked.
Juliett went public with what happened to her in 2016, telling her parents and performing a powerful poem about revenge porn. "I was able to tell my story before it got told for me," she said.
A movement against "revenge porn" when the most obvious thing is to tell women to stop taking nude selfies and sending them to strangers. You see, this is too difficult and obviously impossible, so there must be a march against the men who share the pictures instead. Instead of learning from the negative consequences of your own actions.
So the message is that women can't control their behavior or learn from the negative consequences?
The world is fucking ridiculous.
