Considering buying and living on a houseboat. Anyone already doing so? Cost/benefit?

Just as important at the boat you pick are the local liveaboard laws. Pay very close attention to this: jurisdictions are starting to clamp down on people living aboard boats because they're not collecting property taxes on them. And many marinas have strict policies on liveaboards.

This has been on my shortlist for some time. I've researched locations in Florida, Oregon, Washington, and California. All have restrictive laws, or are considering them.

It's a damn shame - getting harder and harder to go your own way.

Regardless, I think it's a fine decision. I'm not sure I'd pick a houseboat, just because I'd prefer the option to float elsewhere for a change of pace.

Forget the houseboat until you’ve actually tried living on a boat. It sucks ass. Great if you’re trying to reduce costs, but the upkeep costs can be enormous, and the smell in marinas can be terrible.

A boat is a hole in the water made of fiberless into which you pour money. I converted a cargo trailer into a living space. Complete with shore power, AC, fridge, and TV. Less expensive, and a lot less complicated.

Any thought on a mgtow colony. Thinking of making a communal houseish area and have people part decked out mini houses on the property. Or like those storage crates turned into mini cabins.

I have a friend that lives on his sailboat in Marina Del Rey. There’s like a 3 year waiting list for live aboard permits but his boat was only like 100k and the rents reasonable. Way cheaper than a house out here and he sails every day. Lives the dream

I did this for around 3 years.

Great lifestyle if you don't live in Cali, or some similar over-regulated shithole... I'm in Texas. If you pick a decent marina it makes all the difference.

I was on a 40' houseboat, and don't think I'd be comfortable with something smaller.

For me it was comfortable, inexpensive (unless you go cruising often), and you wake up on the water every morning.

10/10 would do again.

I live on a 56 foot long narrowboat in the UK. A narrowboat is 6 feet wide and mine, like most, is on the UK canal system. The boat cost me about £25000 and the license is £850 a year (I don't live in a marina, I cruise around).

It's an incredibly cheap way of living. I have solar electric, gas from bottles, WiFi from 4g and a woodburner. I love the cheapness of it. And it's very comfortable.

I sleep better in (my) boat. Can go fishing and wakeboarding anytime also. Most of the boat dwellers I know are running away from their wifes.

Its most likely not very convenient in the long run. How do you get your mail etc?

If you own a house and want something else than a summer cottage besides it then its a good choice.

Personally I'd go with something smaller. You need something with a functioning galley and shore power wiring so you can run AC etc. The reason I suggest smaller is you will be more likely to actually use it and build skills. Consider boats from 28 to 32 feet in my opinion.

Consider that legally emptying your shitter will be a big hassle, and if it breaks you’ll likely have your bilge full of raw sewage.
