I’ve never understood why people just wave their hands, give the checkbook to the wife, and go “you deal with it”. What is the deal with people not giving a shit about their financial health?

He doesn't need to do anything, he has worked his ass off for decades and now he's retired. His wife NEEDS to fix her own problems. She needs to get off her lazy, entitled ass and work 40+ hour weeks until her debt is completely paid off.

She has committed to finding a job and paying off all the debt by herself, but I feel I have been completely betrayed and have loss my trust in her.

If he buys this , I have some beachfront property in New Mexico to sell him. I love that the top comment is " you busted your ass to retire ...but maybe you should just go work some more for another decade and be really nice to your wife ...give her an allowance and whatnot" . The wife used all their credit cards to rack up debt but it's the husbands responsibility to pay it back LOL.

i don't understand how she can hide 80k of assets from you without a paper trail unless she's got a drug habit or a public storage unit with car/boat/jewelry/gold etc. this was done on your credit card, not cash. btw i feel for your loss. every man loses. i've lost bigger if its any consolation to you. but not on credit cards with statements that come every month

This is common. Spouse 1 is asleep at the wheel while spouse 2 develops a spending addiction, which is the same as a gambling problem. I've always preached financial transparency to my kids. SOP for me and my wife. We knew where every cent went and controlled the use of credit cards, always using bank cards (cash, really) instead.

I had an old friend living comfortably in retirement. His wife handled all the finances. When his wife suddenly passed, his kids effectively did a forensic investigation of his finances- he was that clueless. Turns out she had a gambling problem and had drained all of his retirement/savings accounts. All he had left was a pension, SS and his home.

Always, always be involved in every detail of finances.

My wife ran up 75k in credit card debt. I am paying it off on a monthly plan, she is not allowed to have credit cards anymore.

It kind of goes without saying that marriage is pretty much a sh*tty deal for men. I did it for purposes of reproduction.

Honestly? The guy should get a new bank account/investment account and transfer all his savings and all available cash to them, where his wife doesn't have access. Then just disappear to South East Asia the rest of his life. Completely ghost her.

I'm surprised more married men don't say no to the wife being an SAHM.

It seems like SAHMs do this kind of shit, while a working mom has enough sense not to. It's almost impossible for an SAHM to get back into the workforce and get a good paying job.
