It's not as hard as you think. I lived in Japan for a while (study abroad) and came to find it's very, very easy to get around there even if you know very little Japanese. Get a phone, some ¥, a Lonely Planet guide, and just hop a train to one of the MANY HUNDREDS of beautiful temples like this around the country.
If you've got a week and understand that Japan is a very safe place, you can easily chill out atop a mountain amidst ancient temples, drinking green tea in absolute serenity. I would like to do so again soon.

Like I replied to TaiYongMedical, it's probably more accessible than you think, and I highly encourage it. The hardest part is probably the flight there from wherever you're based.
I suggest Kyoto for things like this place. Or head to Hiroshima and catch a ferry to Miyajima! Hike up the mountain while friendly deer greet you, have a coffee at the Cafe on the peak, and enjoy the 360° 20-mile view of the ocean around you ;)

In the past, human cultures placed great importance upon 'the sacred'. Places where you could go to establish a spiritual connection were given respect and protected with great fervor. Part of the modern day attack of the neocon Jews who own the world (on paper and with money) is to attack and destroy all spiritual and cultural aspects of those around them to cause chaos and instability, so they can better accomplish their agenda. I don't know why people are tolerant of a group (Israel) that's so intolerant of those around them (Palestine in particular, really any non-Jew), but that's all part of the fucked up world we live in.

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but monks built their own temples, right? They didn't contract out the build?
I'm just imagining a handful of men who decided to take a vow of whatever their monkhood entailed, then just gathering stones to eventually craft this scene over hundreds of years of dedication to a higher level of existance.

Not always. Sometimes they got support from the ruling class to arrange for their construction.For example, Prince Shotoku was really into Buddhism, and he hired 3 Korean carpenters to build this Buddhist temple in Osaka.

But I know that some Zen temples are very self-suficient and grow their own food (but I'm still not sure if they actually built them themselves).
The temple in the OP is a Tendai Buddhist temple, but if google translated a Japanese page correctly, then it was originally a temple for a Japanese native religion. I couldn't find info about its construction, though.

No...monks don't build their own temples. They have a massive following, who build it for them.
At least that's how it works in India.

Yeah, I think that's usually how it is. Although Buddhist monks sometimes build themselves simple retreat huts to do long solo or small group meditation retreats in.
