You can never truly be prepared for this sort of thing. My heart goes out to you, your daughter and your family.

I would recommend doing an activity with your daughter that you don’t normally do so you can be in a different location when you tell her. You don’t want her to be reminded of this talk every time she walks into the living room.

Something peaceful you can do alone together like taking a hike, fishing, etc. would probably be the best way to tackle it. It may also simultaneously support the lesson that when terrible things happen, the world keeps spinning and there are people who love you that you can lean on.

Update.. I picked her up from school. They are aware and directed me to resources. It's a phone call today we always knew was possible but never prepared for. She's had a heroin addiction on and off for 5 years. We went and had ice cream and walked some trails to a lake in a state park and sat down and talked. She's not allowing it to process yet. She probably doesn't know how to feel. Some of the comments are pretty heinous and you guys should be ashamed. This isn't a reward or a release or good thing. A girl lost her mother.

Sorry to hear.

You know your daughter, you know her mother, and their relationship. Consider it all, no matter what, she was her mother. Gentle, kind, truth. Is there a place her mother liked, someplace to connect? Reassure your daughter, whatever she needs you are there. Take time off work and school for both of you if needed.

Maybe loop in the school if you need to? They will have a good idea what is age appropriate and what the current level of discussions exist for your child. 5th grade is pretty young for some stuff.

I think I've read children experience the loss multiple times as they move through developmental stages. I'd say I listen to her, and find children's grief and loss groups to connect to.

I am so terribly sorry for your loss.

It sounds like your ex wife might have done many mistakes and hurt you.

I'll probably get banned from saying this, but our societies have lost their way and we forget the symbiotic relationship between men and women and how in the end of the day, it is not a competition, we are in it together.

I am not saying your ex was not a horrible person...she sounds like she hurt you.

But now you and your daughter are in this together and she needs love in her life, not hate.

So both of you, need to focus on the good things and remember her at her best.

I'm sorry brother. May I ask how she passed? I too came into custody but only after spending 25 grand on lawyers. My kids mother was on coke during the court case so it was a slam dunk. I raised them alone. My kids mother is currently on meth and the kids barely speak to her.
