One less thing young women can do to maximize their hypergamy by parading in front of the rich and powerful. That's all pageants and competitions of this sort ever were.

It's also an anachronism. Today's "ideal" woman is, supposedly, "tough," and "ambitious." They are not these saccharine and congenial types, and haven't been for half a century.
