FU money is generally defined as money that is exposed to zero (or very low) risk that throws off enough interest/dividends for a person to live off of indefinitely.

The chances of anyone ever getting to this amount is so low, so I think we need a more realistic definition. We need a definition that's more realistic, and something that, with hard work, can be achieved by the common man. I think it's more of a life situation than an amount...so it's not FU "money", but FU "position".

Also, there are exceptions, but I don't consider self employment or entrepreneurship as something to put you in a FU position. For example, if you have a regular 9-5 job and also a side job doing contract work (programming, web, etc), unless you have enough cash to sustain yourself for a long time, you're still beholden to both the 9-5 job and the contract work.

Gentlemen, I believe I'm there now. I've gone hard-core minimalist, I have zero debt, and I have enough cash sitting in the bank to sustain my current lifestyle for five years, without needing to work. So, I can readily tell my boss (or anyone else, excluding the police) to "fuck off".
