Artists, entrepreneurs, professionals, writers, leaders in business and society, all of them have one thing in common – they produce.

More a quibble with this part in particular rather than the post: many of these people do no such production.

Artists and writers, by their nature must of course. But go to the entrapaneur subreddit and it is nonstop discussions about affiliate marketing, cross shipping , and talk of Chinese manufacturing suppliers. Professionals is broad, but lawyers almost by definition produce very little of anything but paperwork. A leader in business needs only to make a profit; this is as likely to be a swindle or grab at government money as anything else.

I guess my point is, don't mistake profit for being production. A huge amount of these people are simply (usually unnecessary) middlemen who just moved some money around on the spreadsheet. We call this a service based economy apparently.

Most of the real production done in society is done by a shockingly smaller contingent than you would imagine; most of the rest are just glorified camp followers.

YES. This is it. This is what took me years to realise. I looked at all my heroes that I admired so much - from martial artists like Bruce Lee to politicians like Theodore Roosevelt. And what did they all have in common? They produced. They provided value to human civilization.

I use the Silverback Gorilla analogy for this. What does the alpha silverback gorilla do for his tribe? He provides protection and leadership. And in return, he gets first choice in mates, and has a 'monopoly on respect'.

The people who got rich on the Klondike gold rush were not the miners (in general)...

But the people supplying the miners.

There were some pretty fucking awesome Female Entrepreneurs in the Klondike Goldrush, and not just whores either.

For example, I forget the exact details, but there was a woman who had some startup capital (for simplicity's sake let's say she whored for it).

With that capital, she bought a bunch of bed-heaters (essentially just a giant metal spoon you could open to insert hot coals). She bought maybe 5,000 of them.

Once she sold all her bed-heaters over the course of a few months, she used that capital to purchase building materials. She paid a couple carpenters to build a couple cabins.

In exchange for allowing them to stay in their cabins, she employed the carpenters plus more, creating a cabin-building crew to build tons of cabins (with the building materials she purchased and had shipped in) in the surrounding area for rent/purchase (Dyea, Skagway, along the various routes, etc.).

Ultimately she banked the fuck out.

All genuine economic transactions involve Party A solving a problem had by Party B. For example, a supermarket solves the problem of shoppers who can't access the original sources of foodstuffs. A doctor solves the problem of lack of medical knowledge of the general public.

Find a problem people have and be very good at solving it. The money then flows like water.

So... how does one be productive again? There's a lot of talk on how to not be so consumptuous, but there are a lot of people out there reading this thread wondering "so what exactly can I produce?". If I had the appropriate skills to build a business or make a piece of art or lead the free world, would I be on this subreddit right now? The answer I imagine for the greater part of this community is "probably not".

What people need to do is have a clear track of what they could possibly produce to improve their standing in society - something this feel-good thread ultimately culminating into the message "Go Do Something" does not equip its readers to accomplish.

If you want to go do something, places like Youtube have how-tos on multiple areas of interest to develop your proficiency at whatever your heart may desire - shit, my buddy uses Youtube to look up videos on how to fix old aircraft. If you want to learn how to orate to a crowd, there are regional chapters to organizations such as Toastmasters that can improve these kinds of skills. Take advantage of whatever education is available to you.

And do remember, the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. That single step is the hardest one to take but often, once you start it's easy to keep going.

In The Education of Millionaires by Michael Ellsberg, this is called the "entrepreneurial mindset," compared to the "producer's minset" as you call it. "Consumer's mindset" vs. "employee's mindset." The names are different, but the concept is the same. The person with the entrepreneurial/producer's mindset observes their environment and finds a way to make it better. They do it and ask for forgiveness later. If they are working in the corporate environment, they disregard their job title and work on adding value to the company in whatever way they can, not only doing what is listed on their job title. The employee clocks in and clocks out, accomplishing the minimum and in return receiving it. They don't really care much about anything other than receiving their paycheck, and will do whatever they can do ensure they don't lose their job. This usually means they will do whatever they can to not break any rules, meaning they will only do what is listed in their job title.

The entrepreneur is constantly learning through self-education. They are reading a book, treading a new path, networking with people in their field, asking for advice when appropriate in order to improve themselves, and in return, those improve those around them. By helping themselves, they enable themselves to help others. The consumers simply consume what the entrepreneurs provide for them. Whether it's a paycheck or instructions laid out for them, they are doing the minimum and what's considered "safe." They obey their credentials and stay in line with what they are told to do.
