I would not fault her for loving her pet and wanting to do things with her family. I do not currently have a dog, but when I did, I certainly cared for her. In addition, placing importance on family is generally a positive trait and the fact that she got along with her family members is a good sign. Many women with personality disorders and other emotional problems do not get along with their family.

However, I can certainly understand being dumped for a petty reason and your friend's experience with women.

With today's toxic legal climate and culture, going your own way seems the only viable option. However, you do not need "to face a life of loneliness." Just because you are not dating women, does not mean that you cannot have friends. It does not mean that you cannot enjoy time spent with your own family. Going your own way does not preclude you from having mentors, being a mentor, or associating with men interested in a common activity.

Furthermore, even for the times that you are physically alone, it does not mean you have to experience loneliness. If you become involved in a hobby or interest that you enjoy, the time will pass by very quickly. To clarify, a hobby or interest does not have to be an expensive, all-consuming activity. Many men love to read, watch videos on certain topics, create videos, play video games, fish, go to the gym, play music, create art, build something, and the like. In addition, as you reside in Los Angeles, there are probably many enjoyable things that you can be doing in the city.

I would advise you to expand your circle of friends beyond the ones that "just want to get drunk and have sex on the weekend." If you have an activity or interest that you really enjoy, in addition to doing it, you can find others in your area who also enjoy it. Maybe even finding the appropriate subreddit about this activity or interest will facilitate meeting other men in your area who also share this.

You are very young and have your whole life ahead of you. While you want to be a realist, focus on the positive. For example, as you have decided to stop dating, you will have more money for yourself. As you will not co-habitate with a woman, you will probably not be subject to false domestic abuse allegations. As you will not marry, you will not be divorce-raped. You have the freedom to do as you please, and you do not have to seek female (or male) approval or validation to do it.

I stopped looking also, been married 23 years. I've moved on to married MGTOW. It's nice to have someone in your life but you have to call them on the B.S. It is good that you are realizing this now, rather than later. I'm 22 and have never been in a relationship. While I'm still curious about what it's like to be in one, I can already see the slippery slope. I don't feel that it would make my life any happier.

As for the lonely part, I will say it is tough considering I've been alone (as in, not in a relationship) my entire life. It does suck, but it definitely sounds better than getting "stuck in a moment that you can't get out of", as U2 says. Only, that moment could very well be lifelong.

20?? you have plenty of time. I graduated highschool at age 17 and partied my ass off till I was nearly 23. But I worked a bunch of shitty low paid jobs that I hated and realized that I could not party forever. Most of my friends were getting married but that was not my path. I finally got my shit together almost by accident when I roomed with a guy who was an electrical engineering major just about to graduate. I realized I was smarter than this guy and if he could do it I just knew I could. Graduated at age 26 with an electrical engineering degree, landed in San Francisco with basically that piece of paper and the shirt on my back. Had a great 30 year career and retired financially independent.

the key is to have a plan and the discipline to follow it thru.

there are a ton of shitty jobs out there that might seem cool and good paying when you are young. Trust me, when you hit your 40's and 50's you could end up with a broken body and hating life if you take the wrong path. A college degree in a field that is in demand (STEM) is the way to go.
