we get a job and we get paid in terms of time: per year, per month, per week, per day, per hour

I'm 40. My life was destroyed years ago. I lost my job, cars, house, pets, health and self respect. Still on my way to recovery. A nice fat salary with a good pension and benefits sounds pretty fucking dreamy right about now.

I take the salary to make it day to day but I am a firm believer of ALWAYS having a side hustle . My job is not my life and while it may dominate most of my time I always have to have time to pursue my other interests outside of it.

If you feel like your job is destroying your ability to live your dreams , I'd suggest looking for a new job.

Some dreams take a lifetime or many years of practice to achieve that don’t pay off immediately or until you reach top level. My salary allows me to pursue that without much help from others. Plus I work about 35 hours a week with multiple paid breaks on a 40 hour/week salary. I think I’m gonna stick around.

I'd say the person who gives up on their dreams for a paycheck, in general is using it as an excuse and doesn't have the resolve or the drive to actually pursue that dream.

Now I understand if you absolutely have no free time, because you are working two mostly full-time jobs or have a special needs kid you're caring for in your off-time, I'm mainly referring to the people that work 40-50 hours a week, spend their weekends goofing off doing whatever.

For the two jobs person, you have to make sure you moving towards something. Don't just tread water. Cut unnecessary spending. If you're trying to beat down a debt, treat paying that debt off like a job and you'll kill it. When I've work multiple jobs in the past, I was too busy to spend money and applied all available funds to the debt payoff and they melted away.

Good dreams take hard work. The more fulfillment you would get from it the harder you you'll usually have to work for it. It usually demands sacrifice and there doesn't seem to be any way to get around that and still have it mean as much in the end. If someone handed you your dream on a plate, it wouldn't be as satisfying as if you earned it yourself. Also, you may just become anxious that it could just as easily be taken away, and you wouldn't know how to go about regaining it, because you don't have the experience that was required to gain it in the first place.

If you have time to get drunk/high, play MMORPGs, binge-watch seasons on Netflix/Prime, then you have time to pursue a dream. Your true friends will understand and respect you if pursuing it takes you away from hanging out as much. Those that resent you for it are only projecting because they resent themselves for not having the willpower to go after what they want. Find a way to free yourself of weak excuses for not following your dreams.

I guess if you majored in a "i'm super special" field and have 150k in student loan debt and accept a 28k/year job in a real world job. I majored in STEM and get to work with tech every day. My salary is a bonus.
