A warm, friendly soul who is gentle and not overbearing or pushy. She welcomes you when you’re new and helps you feel not alone. She watches out for you and is considerate and generous with her time. She genuinely wants to know how you are when she asks and cares what you say. She remembers the things you tell her. Her house is tidy but well loved. Her child drops a cup and it smashes- she doesn’t scream. She asks if the child is ok and is calm, promptly cleans it up and wipes up the water with the child. She is motherly, with or without children, she has a motherly warmth to her.

This. Doing my hair/makeup and wearing a pretty dress definitely makes me feel more feminine, but that only gets me so far, and looks fade. Character and values are where it's really at. What you've just described is exactly the kind of generosity of spirit that I aspire to.

A huge inspiration for me is Melanie from Gone With the Wind. I can't stand her husband, as he isn't mentally faithful to her and has the backbone of a pile of whipped cream. But her good character in the film is what I aspire to when I think of being a feminine woman.

I read your comment in the thread about friends and I agreed and thought it was well stated. I don't understand the need to keep only friends who are in lock step. Obviously if people are putting you in bad positions it's a different story but I think it's worth having friends who expose you to different ideas.

In all my time on RPW all I've been able to figure out about femininity is that it's difficult to nail down and describe. I was recently listening to Camille Paglia read the first chapter of her book Sexual Personae and she speaks so eloquently that (among other things) the feminine is solipsistic because her ability to create life is self contained and contemplative (it sounds way better coming from her). So I find myself nodding along saying "yeah, that sounds like being a woman is awesome". Then when you bring it into the practical it's hard to translate without it feeling less than the independent outward movement of the masculine.

So my big rpw-secret is that I have no idea what is feminine and I don't really try. I want people to feel comfortable and welcome in my home. I want to be second in command to a man who knows what's going on (which is where I position myself both in the home and at work). I still want my voice to be respected and my ideas to be taken seriously - which it is both at home and work. I enjoy talking about ideas and listening to others share theirs. Language is my love language :-P I like knowing that I can take care of myself if I have to (which includes financially, use of a fire arm (safety) and being generally competent) and I like that I don't have to fully do that. I wish to be viewed as competent and loyal.

And I have no idea where all that falls other than under "navel gazing" which of course is the very feminine solipsism :-D

i take a lot of my inspiration from my grandmother and mother. my granny(very soft) was very different from my mom(very tough), but something they both shared is patience and so much love. so for me, it's having an open and caring heart with a spine of steel. but i think at the end of the day, it's more about learning to be your best you. i have friends who are very womanly, but in very untraditional ways. i think everyone has to find their own essence of what it means to be womanly to them, and find a way that works for their personality.

It's hard for me to come up with what "femininity" means in general. I can say what being a woman means for me, but I doubt that's universal.

For me, being a woman means being intuitive and aware of change. The positive side of this is being able to "read" other people's shifting moods, needs, and concerns. It means being in tune with your loved ones. It also means being sensitive to beauty and hopefully being able to create beauty.

The negative side of all this -- I think women are probably more prone to moodiness and anxiety than men are. They can lose themselves in their homes and their kids. They can be almost wilfully irrational. (When I say "they" I am pretty much talking about myself.)

Of course I also think we have a masculine side, I don't mean that we are all intuition and emotion. Women can be brilliantly analytical, rational, etc etc. But I think there is something uniquely feminine about the qualities I mentioned above.
