Hi ladies!

I grew up in a way that I'm sure many of you could relate to. I was told to essentially "be a man" in all walks of life - do everything independently, get aggressive when people question or assert themselves over me, speak brashly and rudely, etc. After a long period of growth and acceptance in who I am, I've realized I'm caring, attentive, a bit of a bleeding heart with certain subjects, sensitive, not argumentative, not competitive, and maybe a bit of a cry baby sometimes.

I'm 19 and my boyfriend (23) and I live together in a somewhat pricey city. We both have traditional jobs because our expenses are relatively high for our age (I think..?) despite us being pretty frugal. My goal is to work from home in some way as soon as I can - I have three ways of making money on the side but they're not always stable so I would not quit the workforce until I had more security. When our lease is up we're going to move somewhere much cheaper but that still won't change the fact that I'll need to work at least part-time at a regular job (he is a mechanic and wants to support me/our children one day but right now that's not doable and I wouldn't insist on it if it would be a struggle in any way!)

My problem is that working is so difficult for me. I realize this is a "first-world problem" but like I said I'm a bit of a cry baby, lol. I'm a server and until I get a degree that's probably the most lucrative job for me - the money is great and allows me to live in a way that I want to but jeeeeez, the work culture can be rough. I've left two jobs in the past and at both of them, one of the main reasons was that I genuinely felt like I was being "bullied" (I don't know how else to put it). I'm not weak per se, but I'm not confrontational at all so I guess people can just sense that they can be rude to me as I'll just get sad, whereas everyone else would light a fire under their ass.

I know that in restaurants people banter with each other a lot. Well, I can't change my personality - I don't like to be made fun of by people I barely know. I have no problem joking around with them but when they're insulting me and calling it a joke when I get quiet it irritates me. People try to boss me around CONSTANTLY - literally shoving me out of the way when they want to do something, demanding I do things for them while they're talking to a friend who came in, things like that. I don't sit down and take it but I am SO BAD at putting my foot down in a setting like that.

Do any of you ladies work in a somewhat harsh environment where you feel like you don't necessarily belong? How do you deal with it? How do you fake that kind of personality? Any tips for an overly sensitive person dealing with assholes on a daily basis? I did a self-improvement 180 on myself to STOP being sarcastic, crude, and insensitive - I don't want to be like that again! Thank you :)
