Hi everyone,

Hope you have all had a lovely Christmas!

My boyfriend and I have been together a year and a half, and are both 26. We are planning on moving in together and for the most part we have had a happy and loving relationship, but I am having doubts on the long term success of our relationship.

When I met him he was thin and took great care of his body. Since February he has been drinking more and more excessively on weekends, and sometimes even during the week. He recently turned up at my work party completely drunk and it was scary because my mum is an alcoholic and I had a hard upbringing as a result. I have had a very difficult December as my grandmother whom I am very close to has been in and out of hospital and I've been looking after her. He barely would ask how she is, and I felt he wasn't there for me.

I spoke with him about this a couple of weeks ago, saying I was worried for his wellbeing. We both cried and had a really good conversation, where he admitted he was going through a rough time and wasn't sure why, but since then he has stopped drinking so heavily, and has been going to the gym and focusing more on his health as well as being there for me during this tough time.

I thought this would help but I still feel upset about what happened, and have lost attraction as well. My fear is that he may do this again if he goes through a bad episode. On Christmas Day he spent hundreds of dollars on my gifts, but I then found out by his mother that he has no savings. They joked around saying he is young and is just enjoying life, but this didn't sit well with me. My dad met him and thinks that he is perfect and should forgive him. It is true that he is a very sweet and kind person, but I am not sure now what to do.

Should I give it some time, or is this a red flag?

Thank you, any advice is appreciated.
