Did you read your post out loud? Imagine if another redditor had this same issue, what would you tell them?

1 physical date that lasted less than an hour

Months and months of talking

0 gifts

0 romance

now we’re boyfriend/girlfriend 💘

Girl I just skimmed because the answer is you’re not following FDS guidelines. You’re supposed to date multiple people until you have a solid commitment. You’re wasting your time on someone ten years older than you who loses value steadily each year he ages, and already lives far away. You’re 20 in the prime of your life. You can keep talking to him, but at the very least PLEASE go talk to other romantic interests. Especially since they’re HVMs. And why waste time on and older man who lives so far away and does bare minimum, when you can be with someone way closer who may treat you way better?

So I went back and read it and the fact that you think he has a social disorder was kind of funny to me. The reason I say it’s funny is because from the way you describe him, it doesn’t sound like a disorder. The fact that he uses big obscure words signals to me that he’s full of himself and trying to come off as intelligent to impress you and thus boost his ego. The fact that he offers marriage and says nice stuff doesn’t mean anything. Men will say anything to get what they want. Words don’t matter, actions do. If he says he’s going to do all these things to commit, but doesn’t show it. Then he’s full of shit and just playing you. The fact that he’s an older man also makes this more likely. He probably has experience conning women like this. I’m sorry you have to deal with such bullshit. I’ve dealt with the same type of men and it is such a damn headache.

Thank you for your honesty. I needed to hear this. I legit thought he may be a high-functioning, financially-successful autist.

[–]yumiiaFDS Apprentice 4 points5 points6 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah FDS can be brutally honest. I feel guilty sometimes talking like that but it is necessary for improvement here. I like that they call me out on my bs haha. And I feel you on that, I used to think similar things about my ex and it made me excuse his terrible behavior.

We are bf/gf! It's too late to do the single to engaged method, unfortunately. Is there a way to open the relationship back up and be like, until I have a ring I am just going to keep my options open?

[–]yumiiaFDS Apprentice 5 points6 points7 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Honestly, if we were just going by the guidebook, it would say to dump him block and move on. But I don’t think many people want to be that cut throat. It’s common for men to be lovey dovey and put a lot of effort in until they get comfortable and stop trying. Here are some options I’ve thought of: 1. Talk to him about the relationship and why he’s like this. Tell him you’re unhappy and unimpressed. And you have other men that are interested in you that you’re going to go on dates with. This will either get his ass up to do more for you, make him angry, or he’ll agree and probably also date other people as well. 2. Consider telling him that you don’t think this is a great relationship and you don’t want to fully commit yet unless he can prove that he is going to do what he says. Tell him you’ll be going on dates with other people. 3. Completely break up with him and tell him why 4. Break up with him and give him closure if you feel like you need to. Not sure if this is the best advice but I tried. Hopefully other people will chime in. My honest opinion though is that he’s not worth it.

He got angry, flipped it on me, and said that my high expectations and being high maintenance is ridiculous and how dare I have the audacity to ask for more affection from him. The conversation went from me trying to ex press my feelings to me apologizing for being so awful to him in a matter of an hour. Lol. :'(

[–]yumiiaFDS Apprentice 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

You weren’t awful to him at all. This shows he is a LVM. You need to get the hell out of that relationship. It is typical for a LVM to blame the problem on the women when she tells him she is bothered by something. It’s called gaslighting. It makes you question yourself. If you’re too sensitive, if you’re not a good person. When in reality the guy is just treating you like dirt and is trying to keep you where he wants you by flipping the script. Please leave him honey. Also you are not high maintenance at all wth. You don’t even live close by and he doesn’t take you on dates?? If he can’t even do that and sees it as high maintenance then why be with him? What is so great about this guy that makes you want to stay with him? Also you neeeedd to read the guidebook for this sub. Please it will help you a lot.

He's juggling multiple women.

[+]BleuRaspbery-2 points 6 years ago* [recovered] (5 children) | Copy Link

What makes you say that? What's the tell?

[–]extraacct1234Ruthless Strategist 17 points18 points19 points 6 years ago* (4 children) | Copy Link

What doesn't! He doesn't put any time or effort into you, you haven't seen each other, he's older, you admit he hasn't wooed you at all, he has never bought you a present for any holidays in 6 months...

You're spending mental time and energy on someone who isn't spending it on you.

Oh also the empty marriage talk. Butni see a pattern of lots of talk that you're getting caught up in but no actions to back it up.

[+]BleuRaspbery0 points 6 years ago* [recovered] (3 children) | Copy Link

You're probably right. I am going to confront him and update what happens.

[–]extraacct1234Ruthless Strategist 12 points13 points14 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

He's showing you how he feels with his lack of action. Period. There's nothing to confront. You can't confront someone into putting effort into you and liking you and being serious about you. He's not serious about you I think he's using you for emotional neighbor which is where all the talking comes in.

He's only going to use that as another opportunity to manipulate you. There's a reason older men date younger women.

[+]BleuRaspbery1 points 6 years ago* [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

I didn't even get a chance to confront him or ask him about his lack of effort. When we had our nightly call last night he just went off on me for not answering the phone earlier because I was busy. It's heartbreaking how right you all are.

I'm sorry.

But also save yourself the ##YEARS## of accepting scraps and the waste of your youth and invest in yourself!

we've only met briefly when I was in his town for work commitments. He took me out for dinner

One date? In six months? That man is not your boyfriend.

he wants to fly me out to his town again soon (I kind of feel like he should come to me this time)

Has he actually made the plans? Picked the dates? Bought the tickets? If the answer to any of those is “no”, then he is not your boyfriend.

Have you suggested he come to you, and if you did, did he reject it? He is not your boyfriend.

has not bought me anything for Christmas, New Years, nor sends me cute gifts in the mail. Doesn't really do anything romantic. We talk every day and that's it.

He didn’t buy you anything for Christmas!!! A boy I was dating for literally two weeks bought me something for Valentine’s Day, there’s no excuse for a Grown Man claiming to be your boyfriend Of 5 months to NOT BUY YOU A PRESENT For Christmas! this man is not your boyfriend!

I am in my 20s and he's in his 30s.

Not the reddest flag, but combined with everything else it is a bad sign.

You say he’s very sweet and you talk every day. Listen, it’s very easy to say the right thing to woo you. It’s much harder and financially risky to do the right thing to treat you right.

Don’t even waste your time trying to work things out with this guy. He doesn’t treat you like a real partner, just someone to sooth his ego and make him feel less lonely without making any actual investment in your relationship. Just stop answering his calls.

[+]BleuRaspbery2 points 6 years ago* [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

I know, I feel so stupid typing all this out. I know I look dumb right now.

Has he actually made the plans? Picked the dates? Bought the tickets? If the answer to any of those is “no”, then he is not your boyfriend.

Yes, he is currently pushing to make these plans, but I am hesitant now that I am rethinking the whole relationship. Should I go and give him one last shot?

[+]BleuRaspbery1 points 6 years ago* [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

I answered last night and instead of being lovey-dovey he went off on me for not being more available for him. Lol. How right you are. :(

[–]randomgirlimokFDS Apprentice 9 points10 points11 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

My ex was flying his new GF out to see him and paying for it after knowing her a week. If a guy wants to see you, this is what he will do. Your guy doesn’t.

[–]husheveryoneFDS Apprentice 3 points4 points5 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Exactly! They will lovebomb & do whatever it takes to bed a new lady.
