So, this is pretty straightforward, I'm dating a really nice guy. We met over our shared passion for politics and basketball (I grew up in a very sports-heavy family). He's got the whole tall, dark and handsome thing going, and he's well spoken, articulate, cultured and knows how to not be a douche around women. One thing has been bothering me about properly evaluating whether he's a LVM. He's a really smart guy (had practically a 4.0 GPA in high school and his undergraduate), and I feel he's not exactly reaching his potential. He could have gone to world renowned law schools or universities for an MBA, but he's choosing to do his PhD in ... philosophy. Now mind you, he does go to a prestigious university, so he probably won't end up working at Starbucks, but this makes me question his genuine ability, ambition and willingness to be someone who can provide if need be. I am personally doing very well financially and worry he will end up in contractual and adjunct positions, earning a middle-class wage at best, while having had all the opportunity to be a very financially well off and influential person had he chose to get a more responsible and lucrative education. It kind of feels like the guy who plays too many video games, but he's doing this with books he's fascinated with. I worry I might be footing the bill for us if we choose to get serious for a long time, and potentially forever. Do you think this is something I should talk to him about?

Am I looking too deeply into this, or would you say these are signs and red flags that I should watch out for.
