Too much empathy can really set you up for failure in life, especially as a woman. I had to actively fight against being overly caring towards men, because I got taken advantage of over and over again.

I had to learn the hard way that most of my empathy needs to be directed at myself. I still try to be kind, but most people take advantage of that. And nowadays people can't even believe when you show kindness without expecting anything in return.

There is a trending idea coming from the TED Talk universe about living ‘wholeheartedly’. The idea is to live with more compassion, empathy and more specifically, vulnerability. After exploring this idea myself, it struck me how vulnerable my empathy made me! I was opening myself to all kinds of treatment from people in an effort to exemplify kindness. It turned ppl off of me because I seemed fake. I’m working hard on targeting my empathy so I can live authentically, but still safe my energy for ppl who reciprocate and appreciate.
