This statement is agitating to me for alot of ways.

Men are not children who have to 'try'. If you want to help you'll ask how to be helpful or you'll BE helpful. It's just a way of excusing male entitlement and audacity.

You know what I find so ridiculous about the "Maybe he was trying to help?" line of thinking? It completely invalidates you as the narrator of the story. The person listening doesn't want to accept your perception of the situation. They just want to benefit of the doubt some man when you are clearly telling them that you are the one who needs to be believed because you are telling them the story.

They are literally saying "Ya, but maybe you're wrong"

That is a person you have to stop turning to. They are telling you not to trust your own perspective because...who knows what is motivating them to do it. Social programming, they don't actually like you, they don't even realise they are doing it, who knows? But whatever it is is not healthy for you.

If someone is helping then it's obvious. Otherwise, it's some random act that the person is trying to pass off as helping because he doesn't want to justify his actions.
