Oh the male gaze has been around a long time. Simone de Beauvoir mentioned it in Second Sex, and then Laura Mulvey popularized it in terms of media depictions of women in the 70s.

And who could forget Margaret Atwood:

“Male fantasies, male fantasies, is everything run by male fantasies? Up on a pedestal or down on your knees, it's all a male fantasy: that you're strong enough to take what they dish out, or else too weak to do anything about it. This is actually a really interesting point. I studied anthropology at university and an argument one could make is that our values are expressed through the social currency or system that is reflective of our times. So, if we're living in a religion based culture, we'll find a way to justify our values through religion. Likewise, if we're living in a science based culture, we'll find a way to justify our values through science.

Just like what happened with the 'science' of eugenics back in the 19-20th centuries, when scientists were putting forward all sorts of whacky theories to prove that white Europeans were more 'evolved' than black Africans.

Darwin's On the Origin of Species had gained scientific traction at that time, putting the concept of evolution into the scientific psyche. The prevailing Eurocentric belief among 19-20th century scientists was that human evolution followed a linear path - where white Europeans represented the most evolved, the most intelligent and capable of humans and black or indigenous peoples represented (you guessed it) the least evolved, the least intelligent or capable of humans.

Whole areas of pseudoscience sprang up to confirm this way of thinking (see 19-20th century phrenology and craniometry). It totally assumed that the more white you were, the more evolved you were (and that your intelligence must reflect this), not even taking into consideration that greater melanin, or darker skin, was an evolutionary advantage in areas with greater amounts of sunlight (protects against skin cancer).

These scientific theories had significant overlaps with societal atrocities that had been, or were being, committed at the time, such as slavery and colonial exploitation of black, brown and other indigenous peoples.

It just goes to show that science can be heavily biased and though it isn't an area of anthropology I studied, my classmate told me there were very many similar incidences of bias against women in science too.
