I've watched through the series three times over the years. It's audacious, relies on stereotypes, hilarious, and there are some genuine RP nuggets.

The women are all archetypal and fit certain patterns.

Sam is more like a man than anything. She avoids true connections, and has been either alpha widowed or suffers from sever oneitis depending on how you view her. She will screw anyone, had a lesbian relationship that she ultimately ended because she was so fed up with the woman being so 'female.' Later on in the series she settles down with a much younger aspiring male actor (another typical male trope). She is assertive, fearless, rarely loses frame, and has a natural abundance mentality. She is extremely successful professionally, but she doesn't allow that to interfere with her other interests.
Miranda is another hyper-masculine ball-buster, but she is nothing like Sam. Although she is ambitious, she struggles to find her footing in the work place, often worrying about social work events. Nothing comes easy to Miranda, and although Sam will make blunt remarks, she has charm. Miranda is just a bitch much of the time. She shows extremely poor judgement at times. She can be prudish and obtuse, which leads to her hurting the feelings of the people around her.
Charlotte is the most feminine woman of the group and loves to lead a lavish life. Of all the women, she has a clear goal in mind. She knows she wants to be a wife and mother, and based on what's talked about in the show, she has the least experience sexually and has not slept around nearly as much as her friends. Charlotte has the saddest story in my opinion, because she has always known what she wants, but despite her careful planning she doesn't achieve them right away. Her story shows exactly why women need to have a sense of urgency if they want to have children.
Carrie is ridiculous. She is the most narcissistic person in the group, and she has the world's most astounding hamster. She creates every problem she encounters. Whether it's lying, overreacting, or just being irresponsible. She creates her own misery, and everyone around her suffers.

Mr. Big is initially a very dominant and masculine man, at some point along the way they turn him into an emotional coward. I forget which season it is, but when he's married. I felt so bad for his wife, she was perfect. Beautiful, feminine, loving...yet he decides for some unknown reason that Carrie, the second biggest slut in New York is worth pursuing.

Aiden goes from traditional, well accomplished, sweet and dreamy, to hardened and no nonsense during the time he spends with Carrie. He was always higher value than her, as was Mr. Big.

Aleksandr is another hyper masculine and driven man that thinks Carrie is worth spending time with....and I personally hate what they did with his character at the end of the show. Only Carrie Fucking Bradshaw could move to Paris and decide she's miserable and how 'unfair' Aleksandr is being. Utter trash, but that's TV for ya!

I'm happy to talk about anything I've touched on or other things that interest you...or anyone else! I have a love/hate relationship with this show. The only things I'm not interested in talking about are the movies hahah!

Eh, the show is incredibly shallow. It's also comedy. Samantha's character is supposed to be incredibly out-landish. The other ladies on the show are always shocked at her sexcapades, it's not necessarily painted as "normal", just as an option for a modern woman. I think that's fair enough.

Charlotte and Samantha both had storylines that seemed to always revolve around being in a monogamous relationship, especially Charlotte. She is supposed to be the "conservative" girl.

That being said, I don't think any TV show should be used as a source of moral guidance. TV is frivolous and should be viewed as such.

Sex and the City was generation-defining and remains one of the best-written shows on television. Someone once said it was about "the battlefield of love" and I think that's an accurate description. It was obviously greatly exaggerated for comedic effect but I think it also handled a lot of real, romantic issues in a genuine way. The episodes "One" and "The Ick Factor" make me cry and I've seen them like 50 times (I'm a sucker for Miranda and Steve). And the "he's just not that into you" thing is classic RP. There are actually a lot of RP nuggets in the show.

I think the four main characters represent the 4 ways of relating to men. Strong (Samantha), Weak (Carrie), Romantic (Charlotte), Cynical (Miranda), so it is easy to find pieces of yourself in each of the characters. I'm definitely a Miranda-Charlotte hybrid.

If you really want to watch a show about 4 terrible women who are absolutely terrible at relationships, watch Girls. Shudder.

That's funny because I actually think the show has some good RP wisdom, if you're willing to learn from the characters' failures... both in maintaining long term relationships, and choosing men in the first place.

As a feminist, I kind of watched this show as... what the hell are these women doing? They're basically selling themselves, and people are eating this up as if it's normal.

As a writer, I think it was golden. I may be a little more of a prude, but the show had character development (though I believe that took too long), great comedy, and truly sincere moments that many women related to. And they certainly didn't shy away from ANY issue.

As a viewer, I love it. I don't care how cliche it is. I already know people on TV and movies sleep with too many people and way too soon. But that's the storyline that gets me into it, so I'm fine with that even though that's not what I'm down with in real life. I'm always entertained. And I always have good memories of college. (Watching. Not performing the acts as seen on TV! Not that that would be wrong in some cases, but still...)

SATC tried to rewrite human behavior into "women should be the men, and men should be the women."

Meaning, women should screw hundreds of men and suck every alpha dick they come across, because YOU GO GRRRRRL!!! Whereas men (if they're not the alpha cock being sucked by the go-getter feminist women) should be testicle-less little betas who are there to hold the ladies' $5000 handbags.

As a longtime New Yorker, I've seen women try to replicate SATC, and it always leads them to being alone and miserable.
