It's a tough situation. Since it's just one, I'd recommend staying calm for a bit and really scouring the area. I know that sometimes people lose earrings in their own home, they know they dropped it/knocked it over, and just never recovered it from within their own home. Rather than stealing, she may have bumped into the dresser it was on, and it rolled off. Maybe she even noticed it rolled off, tried to look for it, and was too scared to tell you.

Edit: i didn't mean "stay calm" in a minimizing way, I just mean keep searching first for a bit and consider if perhaps she accidentally could have bumped into the dresser?

The first thing is not to invite people you don’t know well into your bedroom. And by well I’m talking about people you know and trust implicitly, people who’ve earned that trust, either over time or through clear action.

The next is to hunt high and low for the stud. I’ve got a story about my friend’s Cartier bracelet and my diamond pendant and how we are always so careful with it and thought our respective maids stole it - until we found it. I’m not saying this happened to you, but sometimes when you misplace something valuable, your brain jumps to the worst.

Assuming that you really can’t find it and she took it, ask her something like “did you by any chance pick up my stud out the box when you were in the room? I haven’t been able to find it since you came over and was wondering if you’d move it by accident.”

You could outright ask her but if she’s going to deny the above, she’s going to deny when asked outright. Might as well be a bit subtle about it - especially in the off chance that she didn’t actually take it.

Don’t trust anyone, until they’ve earned your trust.

I’ve had siblings, relatives, friends, children, animals & strangers steal from me & those are the ones I caught.

It’s part of life, if someone steals from you, you’re partly responsible because you didn’t protect yourself properly.

That’s why safes exist.

If she is the culprit thank your lucky stars she showed you her real colours before she had access to some thing major and life altering that she could steal

You shouldn't let people in your bedroom, this is a private place. I would let there only my mother and a few very close friends that I have known for at least 5 years. I don't think you can know for sure if she took the earring, there isn't really a kind way to ask. But I would watch her behaviour from now on and I wouldn't invite her over again. I guess she is not your only friend, if you are that sure it was her who stole it, keep your distance.

Edit:I missed the information at the end that your bathroom is in your bedroom, then maybe you should accompany your guest and wait for them in the bedroom. Besides, what kind of stupid architect put the bathroom in your bedroom?

give her the other earring and tell her that youd like the earrings to remain as one piece, and that she can have them. and if she ever needs to borrow jewelry than to ask you for it next time.
