I was divorced and 100 pounds overweight at 23, with no career prospects. It was terrifying. I buckled down, worked out, pursued a graduate degree, built my career. My husband and I married 6 years later, bought a house this year, are planning for a baby next year. You can change. You just have to do the work and you have to start now.
The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago. The second best time to plant a tree is now.

Good on you for taking control. I'm turning 23 this year so this is is pretty inspirational.

You're going to make a lot of mistakes in the future as well. None of us get a life where we don't make any mistakes. Every decision is a win win situation. If you make a good decision, you win, if you make a bad decision, you learn a valuable lesson. You've learned a lot, and you will continue to learn.
The problems happen when people can't learn from their mistakes, and make the same mistakes over and over again. Just reflect and pull out as many life lessons as possible from your previous mistakes.

Beating yourself up is going to stop you from moving forwards. It can be very tempting to dwell in self pity/self loathing but you have to be very firm with yourself here and stop this right now! Acknowledge the mistakes you have made and make a determination to try your damn hardest in the future to do things differently. Genuinely try to be better. This takes discipline. I don't think anyone has gone through life without making mistakes (I have made some whoppers and really hurt people) but sitting around sulking about it doesn't help anyone. I know because I've tried. Healthy people are able to accept that they are not perfect and get things wrong.

Live and learn and move forward a better person. Write about your experience, your mistakes and how you will be better. Reread it when these self abusive thoughts happen. Don't rewrite history to absolve yourself. Own it and move on.

What specifically do you believe you have made a mistake in?
