Apart from the very real physical and psychological effects of male circumcision, many times the discussion leaves out the larger implications that come out of genital cutting cultures. These manifest as stereotypes, tropes, and memes about males that either consciously or subconsciously make their way into mainstream and cultural ideas about men and boys and how they are perceived and ultimately treated at large. When the excuses used to justify male genital mutilation (MGM) are boiled down, we can see how this single act, performed on many, leads to further negative ideas about men and boys, quite literally adding insult to injury.

These misandric stereotypes are not equal, as they may vary between cultures and individuals and their given reasons for MGM. But we can recognize how these stereotypes stem from multiple sources and how targeting these areas where men are dehumanized can begin to eliminate the sources of these harmful ideas.

Male bodies are dirty

Male bodies are gross

Male bodies are ugly

Males do not wash themselves

Males are too stupid to wash themselves

Males are too lazy to wash themselves

Male bodies are diseased

Male bodies are defective

Male bodies are wrong

Male bodies are unacceptable

Male bodies are unwanted

Male bodies must look a certain way

Male bodies need to be corrected

Males are expected to conform

Male bodies are subject to ridicule

Males cannot handle ridicule

Men's sexuality doesn't matter

Men's sexual pleasure doesn't matter

Men's bodies exist for women's sexual pleasure

Males should be happy with what they get

Men will/do not practice safe sex

Male bodies are dangerous to women's health

Boys are property of their parents

Boys belong to their culture

Boys may be forced to undergo religious rites

Boys do not have rights

Boys do not deserve protection

Boy's vulnerability may be taken advantage of

Male consent is not needed

Parents value the opinions of others (real or hypothetical) over those of their sons

Fathers prioritize their pride and ego over their sons

Mothers value social cohesion and in-group biases over their sons

Boys are not viewed with personhood

Boy's pain is inconsequential

Boys are expected to "suck it up"

Boys do not receive empathy

Men do not receive empathy

Men are not allowed to complain

Men are not allowed to be dissatisfied

Men are not allowed to be angry

Men will not be taken care of when they are elderly

Men's bodies should be modified to make elder care worker's jobs easier

Males are not "real men" by default

Males deserved what happened to them
