Used to manage a restaurant for some years, we offered a military discount for soldiers when they were dressed out. The thing about military id is any family member that visits the base can get one. Just showing ID doesn’t entitle you to shit. You’re not serving, your relative is. I promise they’re not serving this country so you can harass minimum wage workers and badger them for free shit. But this happens way more often than not. Thing is- you catch more flies with honey than you do vinegar.

I had a regular that came in several times a week, or sent his wife in to pickup their order; I had seen her at the restaurant with him and he was almost always in his fatigues. He never asked for a discount nor did the wife, but they were kind, friendly and polite people, so anytime they came in, I would discount their meal. They were always appreciative but never expected it. If I saw another person handling their tab and he wasn’t dressed out or it was just her, I would always go make sure they got their discount. I would do this for any active duty regular and their family anytime I saw them come in. Dressed out or not, because we had served them before.

Don’t expect shit for free, don’t expect shit to be discounted, but show gratitude when it is, and it will serve you way better in the future.
