Throwaway Account
I (30m) am in an unforeseen situation and feel like the people I know in feel life are too close to the situation to give a less biased perspective and have come to Reddit.
First off, I am the type of person who doesn't like troubling other with potentially negative and/or life changing news until I have all the facts and, preferably, get all my ducks in a rows. I feel like wasting someone's time and causing unwarranted stress can be an A move. Now on to the story.
Six years ago I found out that my then girlfriend was cheating on me. The lease on our apartment was up for renewal and I had gotten a job offer in another state, so instead of angrily confronting her I ghosted her. Told asked my family to block her, which they readily did, and then blocked any mutual friends who encouraged me to reach out to her. Send a message to the side guy that he could have her and that I wouldn't be on social anymore. Although after about two months I was back on with new profile(s).
I was upset for a while but did move on and I am now engaged to my girlfriend of three years. Life was going great for me until out of the blue I was contacted by my ex who told me that I had a five-year-old son. Obviously, I called B.S. and blocked her but she managed to get a hold of my sister and she convinced me that I DNA test would be best. I unblocked her and said that until the DNA test proved I was the father I wanted no other contact with her. I told my fiancé that I needed to go out of town to handle unexpected family issue and that my sister would be coming with me. Since my sister was coming my fiancé didn't ask for details and the DNA test was done. Unfortunately, I'm tied to my ex for the next 13 years and I told my fiancé that very same day.
She was shocked and hurt that I kept this from her. However, I explained that I didn't want her to worry for nothing if the kid wasn't mine and that I was just trying to protect her. I understand that my fiancé will need time to process and reevaluate things and I'm giving her space. Although now that everyone is starting to find out that I have a son some of them are saying I'm TA for not telling my fiancé sooner. I honestly thought that I was doing the right thing but AITA?
ETA: Because I keep seeing this.
- I ghosted my cheating ex because I didn't want to hear her excuses or see her cry. I didn't want to give her anymore of my time and a part of me took some satisfaction in thinking how she was going to struggle with the rent now that I was gone.
- Between my ex contacting my sister and me telling my fiancé it was about 9 days.
- The only reason my sister went with me was because she already knew and wanted to come. If my sister hadn't of known I would've gone alone. It wasn't because I trusted her more than my fiancé.
- When I entered a relationship with my fiancé I wasn't aware that I was a father so I didn't "lie" when I was with her. I don't know why people think I withheld having a kid for years.

Did you read the post? They're calling him the asshole for lying to his current fiance about taking a paternity test it has nothing to do with him ghosting the ex.
OP picked an inflammatory title knowing most won't go read the post and comments and realize that's not what is happening.
[–]jreed11 1 point2 points3 points (0 children) | Copy Link
Ironic because I literally posted at least 7 comments that were heavily upvoted. But since you seem to think the only words that count on a forum are those found in the initial replies, here’s one with 300+ votes.
Did you know that several things can be true at once? Here, people are basing their ultimate judgment on his withholding info, but they’re also torching him in many replies and even initial comments for ghosting his cheating ex-wife.
[–]Reaper621 1 point2 points3 points (1 child) | Copy Link
Why are you getting down voted? It's true. Most of the top comments are just saying he should have told his fiance why he was going out of town, nothing about ghosting the whore.
[–]Mattabooey 0 points1 point2 points (0 children) | Copy Link
People love to shake a good pitchfork.
[–]Budget_Still_4005 33 points34 points35 points (5 children) | Copy Link
Wait wait wait, from what I saw, most of the top Comments were calling him out for not telling his fiancée about the whole mess, not for ghosting his ex.
[–]lAljax 11 points12 points13 points (0 children) | Copy Link
That's what I saw, they don't even bring the kid up most of the time.
It's a given it'll be a matter of paying child support though.
[–]jreed11 0 points1 point2 points (0 children) | Copy Link
Look at all the replies to those comments. That’s what I’m talking about. See my other links, too.
[–]Mattabooey -1 points0 points1 point (2 children) | Copy Link
I don't see any comments saying he's the asshole for ghosting the cheating ex. They're calling him the asshole for lying about it to his current fiance which I agree with. If my ex came to me saying I had a child and was going to take a paternity test I'd be telling my current partner right afterwards.
[–]jreed11 0 points1 point2 points (1 child) | Copy Link
Why are you lying? I easily found at least 7 which were all heavily upvoted.
And forgive me, I didn’t know I had to qualify in a title that “the comments I’m talking about, which do exist and are popularly supported and upvoted on this thread in question, are the replies to top comments.”
Come on.
[–]Mattabooey -1 points0 points1 point (0 children) | Copy Link
Yeah sorry I missed the 7 comments that did say that out of the 621 total that didn't say anything close to that and instead were bringing up his poor communication skills with the current fiance. All the highest voted comments say nothing about him ghosting the ex and specifically talk about how he dealt with the situation with his current partner.
[–][deleted] 27 points28 points29 points (2 children) | Copy Link
Why would a man pay for a kid he didn't help create? He's not responsible for something that's not his
[–]Mattabooey 0 points1 point2 points (1 child) | Copy Link
He took a paternity test and the kid is his though. The issue he's getting roasted for was hiding this info from his current fiance not because he ghosted the ex.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points (0 children) | Copy Link
Then that makes the situation different. I didn't quite get that from what he wrote (I skimmed through it because I didn't have time to read the whole thing), so thx for clearing it up 👌

Out of 621 comments you can find 7 that actually say what you posted. You can't exactly use the crazy minority when the majority of those comments are saying he's the asshole for not communicating with his current fiance, which is true.
Go to any post on any sub and you'll find a small minority of crazy people.
[–]jreed11 1 point2 points3 points (2 children) | Copy Link
Comments which are heavily upvoted? I also didn’t scour the post for every single comment making these arguments. I just picked a few.
Seriously, you’re just trying to deflect: these comments exist and are popular among the people on that thread. I felt it merited discussion. End of story.
[–]Mattabooey -2 points-1 points0 points (1 child) | Copy Link
Yeah crazy wrong posts and comments gets heavily upvoted all the time. Dumb people tend to agree with dumb people.
I'm not deflecting anything you're trying hard to push a narrative that other than a small minority doesn't exist. The overwhelming majority of the comments have nothing to do with him ghosting his ex they're about his poor communt skills with his current partner.
You don't feel it merits discussion when you use phrases like "End of story". That shuts down discussion. You want to push a narrative from your cherry picked comments. Personally that has no place in this sub.
[–]jreed11 1 point2 points3 points (0 children) | Copy Link
Now you’re being a pedant. I said “end of story,” as in, “that’s the end of my explanation for my cross posting this post and the title I chose.”
If it’s a minority view then those comments wouldn’t be getting a ton of support. I won’t keep going in circles, so whatever.

[+]ThisIsTheEnd6 -10 points-9 points-8 points (3 children) | Copy Link
He's being torched for not telling his current fiance about potentially life altering news.
You really should share something potentially earth shattering like that with your partner.
No one seems upset about the ghosting at all.
And it's not 'his girlfriends child'. Its his child too.
[–]jreed11 16 points17 points18 points (2 children) | Copy Link
Hard disagree. There are tons of comments torching him for ghosting and not enthusiastically wanting to be a father to this child.
I don’t really have any problem with the withholding-info judgments, as those comments aren’t talking about his leaving the ex and shaming him for how he did it. Even so, I actually think there’s a debate as to whether it’s okay to wait and withhold certain types of info until you know it’s for certain, so at the least the harshness of those judgments is somewhat odd to me, too, even if I understand them.
Don’t be pedantic—of course the child is technically his. Doesn’t mean he should be expected to owe that child anything. He had no idea of or say in that child’s existing, let alone with an ex who cheated on him.
[+]ThisIsTheEnd6 -6 points-5 points-4 points (1 child) | Copy Link
I only read the most upvoted comments which all followed that theme. I'm sure there are other comments that are less upvoted that are just people being crappy.
[–]jreed11 6 points7 points8 points (0 children) | Copy Link
Fair enough! It’s mainly in the replies to the top comments—e.g., see this one with 200+ votes. It just really caught me off guard. I know that sub can be loopy, and not just against men, but this one was special.
[–]YMaedchen -2 points-1 points0 points (3 children) | Copy Link
No, they are calling him an asshole for not telling his current fiancé that he might have fathered a child. He waited until after he was sure he is the father to tell her. Which were 9 days. 9 days when he lied to his future wife. I mean, I get why he did it. He didn't want to worry her for nothing. But in the end, most people thought he should've been honest from the start with his fiancé. So no, this is not about ghosting his ex.

Oh sorry, last time I checked it looked l much different. However some of them are more about accusing OP of being scared of confrontation. Which is a fair guess since he didn't tell his fiance about the situation untill he had no other option. I mean the ghosting of the ex could alsp be an indicator for this. However it was completly justified in that case.
[–]jreed11 0 points1 point2 points (0 children) | Copy Link
No problem. I honestly could have worded my title better because all I meant was that in this post a lot of people happen to be making this awful argument about the ghosting-a-cheater part and they’re being upvoted for it, even if their ultimate judgment is more about the withholding-info angle.
[–]Swingin-it-swooty -2 points-1 points0 points (0 children) | Copy Link
This could also fit in r/SubredditDrama
[–]babno -3 points-2 points-1 points (0 children) | Copy Link
TBF all of the YTA judgements are because he kept this information from his fiance, which OP conveniently left out of his title.

Yes you have found a handful of examples out of 621 comments. Is this really a hill you want to die on? There are much bigger issues facing men and a few mean comments online isn’t one of them. You’re making a mountain out of a mole hill bud!
[–]jreed11 0 points1 point2 points (0 children) | Copy Link
It’s an online forum. I never said this is the end of men. I just found the comments to be wrong.
[–]richasalannister -2 points-1 points0 points (0 children) | Copy Link
Wrong. They call him out for keeping it a secret from his fiancée
[–]SaberSnakeStream -4 points-3 points-2 points (2 children) | Copy Link
Uh, no. He waited 9 days to tell his Fiancee that his ex had a kid.
You title so conviently leaves out the part that the problem isn't between him and his ex, but him and his Fiancee due to him not telling her anything about it.
If someone withheld information like that from me I would torch their ass hard and ghost them in the same way OP justifiably did to his gf
[–]funkynotorious 0 points1 point2 points (1 child) | Copy Link
He needed time to process it himself 9 days are nothing.
[–]SaberSnakeStream 1 point2 points3 points (0 children) | Copy Link
I don't know man, 9 days is not a long time but it's more than enough to process something. That's an entire week+, so that's 4 weekend days if you can't think while at work..? Idk.
I would be livid as shit if my Fiancee withheld something like that from me. OPs fiancee is in the exact same situation that he was in when he found out his GF cheated on him.
Either way, telling her earlier is the better option no matter what. If she stays or of she leaves then you either dodged a bullet or found a reliable partner. But now it was a question of distrust and horrific miscommunication.
[–]GulchDale -3 points-2 points-1 points (0 children) | Copy Link
I mean, ghosting someone you been with for a while is way more of an asshole move than not telling his fiance about the situation. Not that I'm saying he's a dick for doing it, just that it's more dickish.
If it turned out to be nothing, it would've created a bunch of unnecessary stress and drama. If I were in her shoes, I wouldn't want to know unless it turned out to be true. And then I would be too focused on the situation moving forward to be upset about some white lie. It feels like she is just using that as way to leave him without saying it's because he will be paying child support. Because then she would be the asshole. Instead she can tell everyone it's because he's a liar.
