But there is a lot more to my definition of a good man than just confidence or even leadership.

But...

I value honor, integrity, courage, self discipline, manners (no, I don't care what fork he uses), and strong ethics.

I consider these things to fall under confidence and leadership qualities. When I am talking about a good leader I am talking about honor, integrity, courage, etc.

A dominant man has all of these things. A domineering man lacks them. There is a big difference between the two. A domineering man is a man that has to throw his weight around in a spoiled and juvenile manner because he is lacking in those qualities, qualities that make people want to follow.

I agree that this isn't discussed nearly enough. I recently got out of a LTR and I've been contemplating this for a while. I know what physical and alpha characteristics attract me, but what other characteristics are there that will keep me interested in the long term? I've spent a lot of time thinking about my character and what characteristics I'd want a man have to compliment me. For me education is important. I went to college and I feel like someone with a similar education or equivalent life experience is important. I'm very goal oriented, I'm a planner, and I'm ambitious. I want someone who has a plan in life. Knows what he wants and isn't afraid to do what he has to get it. Courage and honor are also important to me. I want to feel safe and secure when i'm with someone. I have a very outgoing/social personality. I want someone who can comfortably engage with friends as well as strangers. A sense of humor ranks pretty high as well. They've got to be able to make a joke and/or take a joke.

Well, I think that most of the things you described are just traditional masculine traits and values ("honor, integrity, courage, self discipline"), and yes I think men should exhibit them.

For me "stong ethics" is a little more complicated then it is for most people, because for me "right and wrong" or "good and bad" are not so straight forward. I mean if he goes around kicking puppies and tripping old people, then maybe he's not a good catch, but doing things like "hurting someone" or "being mean" are not so clear cut. What's more important than the action, is the purpose. If the purpose can be justified, then so can the action.

I've always had "good character" towards women, arguably too much. I think you're a Unicorn. Good character in and of itself has gotten me the short end of the stick many times.

Maybe it's just the climate I live in but "bad character" gets the rewards.

Or, perhaps I'm just overly cynical. Or perhaps I have myself to blame. Admittedly I was really small and as a result didn't seem as dominant as other males. Nevertheless my character shined brighter than most, and it didn't nullify my other weaknesses. Good character seems to come after attractiveness, dominance, and game in my experiences.

I think leadership is partially about character.

Being a leader means being able to inspire loyalty and trust. With that ability, others will respect and obey someone, even if he isn't nominally in charge. Without it, they won't respect or obey him, even if he is.

Since a man cannot simply beat others into submission, he's going to need this ability to inspire others in order to be dominant.

This is the whole idea! People who cannot dominate themselves should not get to dominate others! This is the most basic premodern idea ever.

The alpha is the man who first and foremost can rule himself.

The whole idea of premodernity is that our egos are dangerous. If we get to dominate, suppress, cut down our own egos, we can offer the same service, the same gift to our women.

I think female character is about kindness and compassion. I am a husband, not a "young pussy slayer" and while physical attraction matters, nothing gets me more than when my wife geniunely cares about a wounded bird or something. I could not do this. I actually should, there is nothing emasculating about compassion, but my nature is that of contemplative distance. Not very good.

EDIT: where is my manly flair? :) Was the CSS changed? I think there may be a bug in it it does not display flairs, yet the sidebar says flairs are still enabled.
