Well here's one I can answer about the free dating sites.

Online dating works. I think it works better than meeting random people in bars, but it doesn't work that well. Very few people will qualify for LTR.
No it's not a scam but low quality people seem to gravitate there. They're not all bad, but that's the trend anyway. Not sure if pay sites are better.
Like any population, there will be a share of crazies there, just like in public. But it's safer to talk to them online a bit before going on a first date. This helps weed out the weirdos.

I don't think it's a scam. 2 of my family members met their husbands on dating sites. Is it better than meeting someone traditionally, probably not, but it's good if you are too busy to go out and meet someone OR are looking for a specific type of person (religion, age, apparently farmers now lol etc). I think a lot of the religious targeted dating sites are very successful.

Met my SO on Plenty of Fish about a year ago. We had both only been doing online dating for a week or so... POF was full of crazies (at least in this area) and we were both on the verge of washing our hands of online dating forever, but I'm very glad we gave each other a chance! Having that kind of success with online dating, especially so soon after starting, seems fairly uncommon... but don't rule it out as an option!

I met my boyfriend on OkCupid after having an account for maybe less than 2 days. I had to sort through a lot of random, creepy messages but eventually I found his and we just clicked. Been dating for over a year now.

I think dating websites are bullshit, personally. The huge catalog of dating-minded people to choose from creates unrealistic expectations in men and women (but moreso women imo). Nobody's willing to "settle" for "close enough" over unimportant shit, which creates this inability to commit... you know, just in case perfect really does exist, and happens to come along. Meanwhile you're running out the patience of the nice and compatible person you're seeing casually who maybe falls a few pounds or inches short of "perfect".

If you're looking for sex, go hard with the online dating sites.

I met my SO online, but not on a dating site-- we're both Starcraft players. So far so good!

I met my now-ex on Match.com and have had several relationships from it. You do have to kiss a lot of frogs, however.

online dating works fine but is a numbers game.

out of 50 profiles, maybe 15 will be approachable, out of this 5 will be not creepy or crazy.

Out of those 5 maybe 1-2 I will click with enough to go on a date.

I think online dating can be a great asset for people looking for long term relationships- you just have to be patient and know how to sift through potential mates. I met my SO on OKCupid. Avoid (or at the very least LIMIT) the number of questions you answer about sex. Be thoughtful, and honest about who you are and what you are looking for. I had a lot of success with online dating, but it can get tiresome. There are trolls, and weirdos, and people that clearly 'mass message' potential matches. The key is to engage in some actual conversation with messages. I tried really hard to reply to every message I received, even if it was to say I wasn't interested.

Online dating is much better than meeting some random guy in a bar. For starters, alcohol plays no role whatsoever. You glance over a quick summary of the person before you decide whether or not to message them. You can tell a lot about a person by how they write. Do they use punctuation? Answer questions as well as ask them? Was the message as long or longer than the one you sent? One sentence to one paragraph messages were always a red flag for me. Do they reply promptly (within a week)? So on and so forth. You don't have to give out your email, or phone number if you don't want to- which was always a comfort to me.

The other reason I enjoyed online dating is because it allowed me to take things slowly with potential suitors....which I know sounds contrary to what many people say. The truth is, it's all about HOW you use the service. Yes, if you want to hook-up randomly with people- then it's a veritable gold-mine. BUT, you can also take things slowly. Message back and forth on the site for X amount of time, then exchange personal emails, then phone numbers, and if all goes well- meet up for an actual date.

There are disingenuous people online, but those same people (and others like them) also exist in the real world. I'm of the opinion that it's easier to 'weed' out the undesirable ones through online dating.

As for the 'horror' stories you hear about online dating...I think it's actually safer than meeting a random guy in a bar (as long as you use a little common sense).

I think online dating is a powerful tool, when used properly.
