Another two harmful societal expectations:

Men are expected to raise and care for a child that is not biologically their own and was conceived through deception /paternity fraud.

Men are expected to provide child support even if the child was conceived when the biological father was raped and/or under age.

A man should definitely risk his life and health to protect the people he loves. That's like the number one thing about being a man. The rest are a bit weird.

Of course a man should risk life and health for loved ones. But so should women, and it's not expected of them, that's his point.

That's like the number one thing about being a man.

The number one thing about being a man is a societal obligation?

"A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm." - the first law of robotics.

Feminism long role is to convince men that they are breeder slaves. First rule of feminism. In case a woman cannot attract one she is entitled to coerce one into slave hood.

If you ask her to work in the same jobs or be responsible for herself, well that’s apart of rape culture.

I'd say so. There's nothing wrong with a societal obligation. Society is bigger than one man, we all work together to keep it going. You could argue that the number one thing about being a man is a penis, of course, but I'm thinking bigger.

I respect your devotion to this communitarian ideal (honestly, not being sarcastic).

In that light, I'd say it's the number one thing about being a human. There's no reason today for a woman not to risk her life and health to protect the people she loves.

I accept that. The idea of it being a man is probably just down to the fact that, most of the time, a man will be stronger and more physically capable than a woman.

[–]whatafoolishsquid[S] 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, that's the root of most gender roles. For example, women are expected to be homemakers because they produce breast milk so they're naturally in a better position to care for the children. These days, though, we aren't allowed to expect those things from women. In that case, we can't expect similar things from men. Just like there are formula and breast pumps in modern society, we have weapons and machines that make a man's increased physical strength basically irrelevant unless you're on a survivalist camping trip and run into a bear.

Those are not harmful gender roles. Paying for dates and making the first move is normal and healthy.

How is one person being expected to pay for dates simply because of what junk they have either normal or healthy?

[–]No-Macaroon5691 8 points9 points10 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The perceived harm comes from when it is expected, or more like, seen as an exploitable trait. That’s what I think, and I love paying for things

[–]whatafoolishsquid[S] 7 points8 points9 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It would only be "normal and healthy" if we could expect equally gender-specific behavior from women. As it stands, you cannot expect anything of a woman you wouldn't expect of a man. If that's the society we're going to build, then it also cannot expect anything of a man you wouldn't expect of a woman.
