Why is it that females can only make themselves look good at the expense of males? A few examples from Discovery:
- They made male characters look weak/stupid/evil while female characters look strong and catty.
Evil bonehead Lorca vs badass war criminal Georgiou (whose crimes are totally forgiven)
Puppet captain Pike vs "Trust me I solve everything" Michael (with a male name)
Emotionally unstable gay guy Stamets vs first year student genius "fat acceptance" Tilly
Emotionally unstable gay guy dr. Culber vs lesbian and outspoken genius Jett Reno
Fanatic klingon cult follower Voq/crybaby Tyler vs "mother of all Klingons" chancellor L'Rell
- Overrepresentation of female leaders:
17 year old matriarch genius Po
L'Rell who easily outsmarted male leader Kol and promoted herself to chancellor "Mommy"
Admiral Cornwell, the brave revolutionist of Starfleet command
Georgiou, emperor of... everything who turned out to be good and caring
Dr. Burnham, who literally saved the entire future from the AI... that always takes a male form
vs
The evil leaders who wanted to wipe out the Kelpiens (male aliens)
Kol the klingon who divided the empire and wanted to kill all humans
The main enemy AI who wanted to destroy all sentient life (in male form)
Captain Lorca who deceived everyone for his own selfish purposes
Constant crying and showing emotions make this all look like a chick-flick. These are supposed to be professionals, scientists, soldiers yet they cry and hug all the time or give endless speeches. Even klingons and vulcans. Showing emotional developement is okay, overusing touchy-feely scenes is not.
Many male characters are intentionally undeveloped and simple. The season 2 finale sums it up nicely: Saru asking women how long it will take them to override security: "5 minutes if you stop bothering us". Yes, male characters are powerless all the time and they need strong female characters to be able to function at all. They are support characters only while women are disarming bombs, infiltrating systems, fighting aliens, saving lives, being heroes. The balance is entirely fucked up.
I congratulate the writers of STD for ruining the perfect balance of previous Star Trek series for the sake of "girl power!". It must have taken a lot of doing. I love strong female characters, Ellen Ripley from Aliens being my favourite. She is genuine, strong but also vulnerable and fallible. An entirely believable character and that makes Alien and Aliens such good movies. Discovery went overboard with the female power and didn't care one bit about a healthy balance. What's tragic is that women complain all the time when they are underrepresented but have no problem when it happens to men.
I know it doesn't look like a men's rights issue but it is.
Equality at the expense of others is no equality.
Thanks for reading my rant.
