I would say that regardless of any factors, besides age I guess, that people should have a right to defend themselves. It doesn't matter what the source is, or the who the person being attacked is, if you want to use violence, you will get violence.

If a small woman punches you and barely does any damage, to wail on her face in the name of “equality” is not the answer. In fact, this has nothing to do with woman/men at all. If you’re 6’4” 250 pounds and another guy starts a fight with you who is tiny and can’t hurt you at all, then the same thing applies; you shouldn’t hit him. Why is this even here? Also, there is a difference between defending yourself and beating the crap of the other, weaker, person. I personally think that people are willing to physically hurt other people should have no legal protection against people trying to physically hurt them. In other words, it should be legal to hit someone to the point of death if they punched you. But that’s not defense, that’s retaliation. Unless the person is really hurting you, if you beat up or even slap or punch a weaker person, even if they hit you first, that’s technically not defense. My wife has hit me a couple of times over the course of our marriage when she got really worked up, but the difference in size and strength between us was so large that her attacks just kind of bounced off. Fighting back would have been like beating an angry child, so I didn't bother.
