I thought by "women on the front lines," they meant healthcare workers. And I was wondering how getting overtime would give them a high economic risk. Then I read the article, which isn't about women on the front lines fighting the virus.

This is so pathetic. It completely misrepresents and exaggerates the gender pay gap, ignores the fact that men working in health, policing, defense and essential services are facing the same exposures to infection and financial hardship, and treats "women" as a feminist collective! OMG. We are facing a pandemic and instead of pulling together these idiots are encouraging discord and division!

First of all, you only come to this conclusion if you look at patterns of individual income, not household income. Because low-earning women are more likely to live in a household with other, often higher sources of income compared to low-income men, you would have to conclude that more than half of those at risk are men (NOT that men are at risk, an important distinction).

Second, and more importantly, the shut down (not the virus itself, but our reactions to it) do indeed hurt the most vulnerable in our society, who often have precarious employment in the service industries. It seems bizarre to even start with the perspective of the whole gender rather than, say, the bottom 20% of household income. They will urgently need help - and I am saying that as someone normally in favour of an efficient, but small, government.
