...men have always desired to protect women historically. Not only, on average, the mother of their children but their wives, sisters, mothers, and things like that. It creates a very strong desire that men don't want to see women vulnerable or in danger and I experience that too, I'm speaking honestly and seriously. The thought that my wife would have to protect herself instead of me being able to step in-between to protect her is horrifying, ok? Like, these instincts are so strong and I've experienced that in my own life. And so even if my wife was actually trained and a competent fighter, even if she was probably better than me I value her life so much I would want her to be the second option if there was a war to break out to go off and fight between choosing between me and her. And I think we see that reflected historically as well. Men are always going to be the ones who step forward to do the fighting before women for soooo many reasons but ultimately it's not actually because women can't fight competently. They can if the get the appropriate training.

He talks about a lot of the more obvious reasons that men fight in war as opposed to women (not about being more/less able to march, which I think is perhaps the most important one as /u/thowaway_throwaway mentioned), but especially much respect for Shad for bringing out this one.

What would it take to in a fantasy society give women a far stronger role in combat?

And this is the most interesting question IMO, though it isn't as relevant to this sub.

Totally unrelated, but I really like this guy! I found him when he did a collar with his brother who runs an art YouTube channel, DrawWithJazza. They fought each other with 3D printed swords.

short answer: no. Long answer: fuck no. If it were doable, women would be trying their hardest to swordfight in an olympic division that was genderless.

The average man has better hand-eye coordination than the average woman as well. Hence why the NBA and football involve only men or women divisions and not cross gender.

Hence ALSO why men beat the shit out of women when they turn trans and go into MMA.

Natural pressures select men to be physically adept, and women to be mentally duplicitous. Both get their weapon.

One question that I have is if female soldiers can actually kill a man. I don't mean physically capable - I mean mentally willing. Because we know that most male soldiers can't kill! Studies in WW2 showed most soldiers actually intentionally shot to miss! The vast majority of all battlefield fatalities were chalked up by a small number of soldiers who may actually be diagnosable sociopaths.

Women may be more sociopathic or less. I genuinely wonder which it is.
