I find women can naturally be competitive in their own way. I find connection in both being humble around other women and helping them feel their best and brightest (and beautiful!). I guess it's going out of your way to be encouraging and not maybe it about you. Male attention is easy, but having female friends isn't about getting attention, but giving it.

I find it quite difficult to have a girl friend group, but I have many individual girlfriends. We became friends by doing things together (shopping, watching movies, going to concerts, taking girly classes like yoga or cooking) or conversation (intellectual or sometimes complaining - RP advocates that women shouldn't complain but I think it can be helpful not to bottle things inside and as long as you understand how to let things go it shouldn't be the end of the world).

Sometimes it's just a hit or miss like others have said. Maybe it's not the right friend match or maybe the girl isn't interested in making friends. Do you have interesting girls in your classes you can start chatting with? I also make efforts for "girl dates" like going for coffee, and talk to them like I talk to on a regular date. Ask about family/hobbies/hopes and dreams. Open up about yourself too. This is how friendships start, sharing your life with each other!

From what I can tell the trick to making close friends is both of you being in the right state of mind at the right time.

I think the girls not latching on but the guys latching on is a symptom of something.

Do you have hobbies? What do you do in your free time? One of the best ways to make friends is to just constantly show up to the same thing/place as someone else. Ex. Same bar, same yoga class, same time at the gym.

E: for the tight knit girl thing I'd recommend a strong bible group. I'm not into religion much anymore, but a strong bible group can do wonders.

Friendship isn't made overnight.

It took me over 11 months to actually start having conversations with female coworkers (about more personal stuff) and it will take some more before we start hanging out.

I think some people have a harder time making friends (for some random reason). My SO is popular and invites me along to everything, so it's a great way to put me in a position in which I interact with people.

I also found doing exclusively female activities (such as getting my nails and eyebrows done) puts me in a place where I have a lot of girl talk with the professional and other customers.

Hey, I have the exact same problem. I never understood why women don't like me. I'm not wildly attractive. I don't steal boyfriends. Men don't worship at my feet. So what am I doing wrong?

Talk to them the same way you talk to your guys friends, be funny and expressive. Too many women clam up and get nervous when talking to other women.
