I've noticed these sort of assumptions a LOT, on the Reddit and internet as a whole. People see a snapshot, a single moment, with ZERO context and fill in the rest of this person's entire life with whichever biases, desires or fears they may have themselves and then attack them for it.

It's a genderless gift. It is also practical in that they can both use it. Many couples buy items for one another with both parties in mind for its use.
