I’m a Woman of Color (WOC) and live in the South. The industry I’m in is still male dominated, Fintech, and very traditional. The office culture is getting better, but there can be improvements.
I was chatting with a co-worker, Brett, about another co-worker who was recently let go, Kathy. Kathy is in her mid 50’s and also a WOC.
Brett: Have you heard from Kathy lately? I hope she’s found some work.
Me: No, I actually just chatted with her last week. She’s got some promising leads, but nothing concrete.
Brett: Yeah, being a woman in their mid 50’s, she’ll have a difficult time finding work in our field. But you know, if I were to lose my job, I’d be screwed. Middle aged white males really have it hard right now.
Me: .....
I’m a WOC and have lived in the South since the late 80’s, I have experienced racism, discrimination, condescending people, you name it.
And now the playing field is becoming more even and this dude is complaining to me. I’m kinda like, “I really don’t give a shit.” I almost wanted to say “Now you know how I’ve felt the majority of my life.” But I didn’t.
I guess I’m asking, am I wrong for feeling put off by his comment, and what the hell do I say the next time he says something like this?
EDIT: I appreciate everyone’s responses. I have to work on speaking up when inappropriate topics are mentioned in the workforce. It doesn’t happen often, but enough that I need to find an effective way to communicate this to people. Thanks again!

"He's never had to live as a woman-of-color, so he doesn't know my life. I've never lived as a white man, but I think of myself as an authority on the topic."

Where are all the Men of Color (MOC) to talk about the intersectionality of racial discrimination and sexual discrimination?
Could it be that MOC have things so much worse then WOC that they're basically ignored and never considered?

"now you know how i feel" shouldnt be something that ever leaves somebodys mouth. If youre goal is to have other people suffer as you did, your movement is one of hatred and revenge, not equality.

Was she wrong for feeling put off by his comment?
Yes, and here is why: Suffering is suffering. Pain doesn't give a damn about the color of your skin or the environment you were raised in. It all hurts the same. Feeling anger or indifferent to someone who is suffering just because you suffered, is not a positive way to proceed with any working relationship.
What should she say next?: How about empathize with the guy and give him some encouragement. She suffered through it already and made it out the other end, so she would be the best qualified to give advice.
Just give the guy a pat on the back and tell him you feel the same.

b-but she's a Woman of Color (WOC) !!!!?!?11

(I'm assuming you're being sarcastic) But I can't buy into the fact that her race and sex make her more entitled to compassion.
Sexism: Discrimination based on gender. Racism: The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability.

Yeah, Im being sarcastic. Everyone of these pathetic snowflakes needs an excuse or label to grant them sympathy from others.

If you knew anything about affirmative action and diversity quotas you'd realise how dismissive your post comes across as, I don't think she should just stay quiet but at the same time it's not remotely controversial.

You're still trying to think of this as a biggest loser game. There are no winners doing that. No problem can be solved with that kind of viewpoint.
Instead boil it down. She made a judgement call on a co-worker because of his gender and race. The amount of suffering is inconsequential. All suffering is the same in comparison to a human. It's how you react to suffering that matters.
She made a sexiest and racist call to react with anger. A better solution would be to use empathy and compassion.

This has to work both ways, otherwise you're just being a hypocrite.

Elaborate. You're not making sense.

When you have people especially people who believe in left wing ideology get offended over this it's primarily because it's a white man saying it and has nothing to do with whether he's right or wrong. Now obviously we don't know the full background of the person who made the topic but the fact that she uses 'WOC' ( Woman of Colour ) is a dead giveaway in my view.
She's putting more emphasis on her skin colour than he is which leads me to believe that her problem with him is inevitably not going to be about anything that he actually said but the idea that a white male would dare say he can be hard done by in the slightest because he is 'privileged'.
Also note the emphasis she puts on the company being 'male dominated' and 'traditional' I'm honestly surprised she didn't throw in white there for good measure. The problem is I don't necessarily agree that what the guy said was right even though it is justifiable I think the only reason this woman is doing it is because it's a white man telling her he might get into trouble more than her.
I've seen this mentality constantly amongst feminists and it happens very often when you talk about false accusations and rape. When you back them into a corner their only responses are "Well women have had it worse", "Statistically it happens more to women" and so on and that I suspect is where her mentality lies.
Oh and yes, I am under the impression just from her using the term WOC constantly and talking about her history that she's getting uppity over him being a white male talking about his problems more than anything else.
[–]Silver_The_Bard 2 points3 points4 points (1 child) | Copy Link
Ah. Ok. Well, I agree with your view of this.
The way the original post does scream "I want attention for this." rather than "Is this a problem?".
[–]Lethn 4 points5 points6 points (0 children) | Copy Link
That's the thing, under normal circumstances I'd agree with you, but the way she uses that left wing phrase "woman of colour" immediately makes me suspicious of her and this is how a lot of them operate. They simply cannot allow white men in particular to be considered victims of anything or seen as being vulnerable in society, it goes against their narrative.

None of them seems to have considered just listening to him with an open mind.
[–]EvilLothar 0 points1 point2 points (0 children) | Copy Link
Maybe he identified as a woman of color as well. He just looks like a middle aged white male and that's what everyone assumes he is... fucking bigots!

Like someone else said, she should probably try to empathize - that's one of the points of empathy, being able to realize that other people shouldn't have to deal with the same shit you have, because it was shotty and we're all human with feeling.
On the other hand, leaving gender out entirely, I kind of feel like a white human complaining about injustice to a non-white human, especially in the south is a bit like bitching to a Native American human about your recent eviction/foreclosure and expecting them to agree that you've got it worse than they do. It all sucks, but some awareness and couth is not an unreasonable ask.
(All that being said, I have zero idea about the hiring climate of financial tech in the south, so grain of salt - it could really well be much worse for a white dude than a non-white chick, with company optics becoming more important, in which case it's somewhat petty to take offense in that particular situation)
[+]ancientalien9991 points [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link
What exactly is going on in the south right now proves that is the case? Are there any laws that discriminate against non-whites in the south right now? I don't understand this thinking. Just because it was bad before for someone else, another person who is having it hard today can't complain?
[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point (0 children) | Copy Link
Like I said at the end, I have no idea. I don't live there. If she's been there since the '80s, as she stated, I imagine that it was that bad then, and she's probably dealt with what he is now - maybe some advice or commiseration would likely be more appropriate. And I'm not saying he ought to pander to her because of what happened in an area in the past either. Situational awareness is a good thing, though. 'Politically correct' gets a bad rap these days, and it honestly has gotten fucking ridiculous, but the pushback against it seems to have thrown regular politeness under the bus. I doubt he meant to offend, though, and if she bitches him out for it or reports him to HR, she'd be overreacting.
I'll also say that I didn't read many of the comment on the original thread, and am only commenting about what OP actually said happened.
[–]jonnyhaldane 0 points1 point2 points (0 children) | Copy Link
If the Native American has not had to deal with an eviction/foreclosure, than the non-white has indeed got it worse.
Why is this so hard for people to understand? Individual experiences are the only ones that matter, whatever your ancestors did.

Well, if he's your superior, keep closed the WOC mouth from insulting your boss, maybe? It's called, 'realities of life'. Age is a huge negative in the working field, the older the harder, and that's for WOCs, FOKs, MOCs, DOCs, LOKs, even for evil white middle aged men.
