I hate her because she can do no wrong.
- Figures out the force on her own
- Out powers Kylo Ren, a guy who trained for years with Luke Skywalker, the first time he tries reading her mind
- Figures out, on her own, that she can use the force to mind control people and break out from her restraints when she was captured.
- Can fly the Millenium Falcon with zero experience.
- Knows more about the Millenium Falcon, and how to fix it, than its owner, even though she's never been in that ship ever before in her life.
- Can out-fly trained First Order fighter pilots.
- Can swim, even though she was raised on a desert planet with zero pools, lakes, or oceans.
- Bests Kylo Ren in a lightsaber fight, with zero training on how to wield one of those, against a fully trained Dark Side Sith.
- Beats Luke Skywalker... BEATS LUKE SKYWALKER... and don't give me that "Luke tuned the force out" bullshit, because we saw him use the force just a few scenes before this. The real Luke Skywalker should've done what Snoke was doing to her in the throne room.
- Lifts tons of rocks on her first try doing it with the force. Something that even Luke struggled to do while being trained by Yoda.
- Is a plank of wood with zero personality.
All these things are amazing, but all of them require lots of training, and years to master. She does all of them with zero problems because reasons...
Edit: Relating to a hero that was born unbeatable is very difficult. That's why every iteration of Superman, when they recast the lead role, has some sort of sequence or scenes of his childhood where we see him coping with the reality of his situation, and many scenes of him as Clark Kent struggling to balance being a nerdy reporter and the greatest superhero alive.
Usually, we need to see our hero get his/her ass kicked somewhat, and then regroup, dig deep, and overcome the struggle. My favorite Spider-Man scene, for example, is the Homecoming one when he's trapped underneath all the rubble and he's REALLY fucked... and has to talk himself up to actually get out of there. He's crying, he's desperate... he's just a kid... and yet, he musters up the strength to overcome this.
If we wanna talk about properly written female heroes, I can make an endless list, but here are some of my favourites:
- Ripley (Alien franchise)
- Sarah Connor (Terminator movies)
- Wonder Woman (as played by Gal Gadot)
- The Bride (Kill Bill movies)
- Hermione Granger (Harry Potter series)
- Leia Organa (OT Star Wars)
- Clarice Starling (Silence Of The Lambs)
- Katniss Everdeen (Hunger Games)
- Erin Brockovich
- Rita (Edge of Tomorrow character played by Emily Blunt)
There are literally countless examples of this being done right. I love all these characters. The fact that Rey is a woman has nothing to do with the fact that her character is trash, and written like a plank of wood.
