Even with all I've seen, it still blows my mind that someone can write this unironically and see absolutely nothing at all wrong with it:

"Of course it's perfectly fine to put male prisoners in these cells. But you can't put female prisoners in those same cells! That's a human rights violation!!"

Gone were amenities like separated bathrooms, private courtyards and kitchens. Some comforts were arranged for their arrival — toilet seats were added to the steel basins within cells.

The best way to stay out of prison is to not break the law.

For years they had been housed in purpose-built cottage-style accommodation, designed to meet the needs of female prisoners undertaking the difficult task of getting by in jail.

How much is this costing the Australian taxpayer comparative to just putting them on a tier?

Professor Lorana Bartels, a criminologist from the Australian National University, said the cells were designed for men — and unsuitable for women.

She said women tended to have better outcomes in minimum-security environments that bear a resemblance to ordinary life outside jail.

Again, how much is this luxurious minimum-security staycation costing the Australian taxpayer? And how many of these inmates are recidivists?

"[The cells are] what you would expect to see in a standard prison — it was not designed with women in mind," she said.

I mean, prisons are designed for me because, either through biasing the statistics by refusing to convict women or because men commit more crime overall due to their lower standard of living, most prisoners are men and most prisons are built to house men. Sure, it sucks, but that's because prison isn't meant to be a spa day.

There's no reason to have gender segregated prisons to begin with.Men and women serve in the army together,aboard navy ships,and in police and fire departments,things feminists have fought for.They should serve in prison together too.

Idk about Canberra, but I have a lot of family in jail and live around Perth and most of them say Bandyup the female prison is the worst. Interesting note the population is 80% Indigenous

Some countries have even toyed with the idea of totally eliminating women prisons. They say female offenders are rarely violent and other methods of correction would be more effective to women that would not work with men.

They say prisons are designed with men in mind, whose prisons typically are loaded with heavy gang activity. While female prisons have very light gang activity. So the claim is that the same prison design and corrections philosophy doesn't work for women.

Well, maybe that will happen with the men assigned to those settings now...maybe we could even use those setting for everyone to help them not get institutionalized like many male prisoners?
