we will not play in ANY professional leagues in North America this season until we get the resources that professional hockey demands and deserves.

They want the benefits of a pro league without the responsibility of building it themselves.

I personally think this is just a play to get the NHL invested in the women's league. Interesting that the women want/needs the mens league to provide for them though.

These women need to read up about the early days of the NHL, how it actually folded for quite a few years, it's early competitors, what the players earned while the league was being built, etc.

Just like most entitled women, they want the end result without having to actually live through the process of making it.

My opinion isnt a popular one, but I think they would make the pro leagues unisex. Then women could fail on their own merits instead of blaming lack of funding.

They aren't making money because nobody is watching their games, so who are they threatening by not playing? Do they think the people not watching are suddenly going to get upset that they can no longer not-watch-by-choice, but now have to not-watch-by-force?

From the article: "This stand by not only the game’s high-profile players but so many of the rank-and-file players would seemingly put the five-team U.S.-based National Women’s Hockey League out of business for the coming season or damage its credibility beyond repair."

"If the NWHL is no longer operational, many will be watching the National Hockey League to see if it might step up in some way. In the past, the NHL has provided some token financial support of the women’s game."

It sounds a lot like they are hoping that they will just get paid the same as men even if their league is not financially viable and nobody watches or cares. Do they think nobody watches because they don't get paid enough? Will they try to force the NHL to pay somehow? I'm not sure how any of that will work out for them, but am interested in seeing how this plays out.

I saw this and to me it's just a publicity stunt. I keep up with sports pretty regularly and had no clue there was a women pro hockey league.

They seem to be hemorrhaging money as it is. How would paying them more money going to stop rather than exacerbate it? I understand the concept of a better product will lead to more cash, but there's already a better product out there, men's hockey at basically every level including at the high school level and they play for free.

Simple question. How many people are going to see women's pro hockey games compared to men's?

The answer to the problem is that they need to do a huge promotion to get more asses in seats for the women's games. But in this lies another issue. WNBA games are boring...sad but true. That's why nobody bought tickets or watched the games on TV. I don't know about women's hockey.

The language of the women indicates entitlement:

"We will not play in ANY professional leagues in North America this season until we get the resources that professional hockey demands and deserves"

No responsibility to obtain the resources themselves, but just entitlement to receive from someone else. Therefore, 'someone else' has the responsibility to give women these entitlements. No responsibility to be financially viable.

The WNBA has not been financially viable, even after an initial multi-million dollar infusion:

“On average [we've lost] over $10 million every year we've operated,” NBA commissioner Adam Silver told the AP in a phone interview this week.
